What’s New from AKC Government Relations
We hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. We know you are washing your hands, wearing your mask, and keeping a safe distance from others, but we have heard many people worry about whether their beloved dogs could catch or spread the virus. In recently updated guidance, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reiterated that there is no evidence that animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19 to people or that pets may be a source of infection in the U.S. Nevertheless, it also reiterated the importance of people continuing to practice healthy habits around pets and other animals, including washing hands and maintaining good hygiene.
Another impact of the pandemic is suspension of legislatures across the country. About 25 states have temporarily suspended their sessions, but almost a dozen of those are expected to come back in the next two weeks. As always, keep an eye out for new legislation and for old bills that could suddenly gain new life, especially as amendments to omnibus or “must-pass” legislation such as coronavirus/ economic relief packages that are typically fast tracked. AKC Government Relations continues to work hard to help protect your rights. In the first quarter, we celebrated a record number of legislative successes, and will continue to partner with legislative liaisons, federations, and local dog owners to fight on behalf of our dogs. Make sure to keep checking our Legislative Action Center for the latest information, including our COVID-19 resources center to stay up to date on what’s happening in your state.
And finally, May 1st is National Purebred Dog Day! This year’s National Purebred Dog Day (NPDD) may look a little different, but we have created a number of tools for you and your club to get involved. In honor of NPDD, we are honoring Legislative Liaisons (LL) who have worked tirelessly this year. Please nominate your club’s LL for special recognition by sending an inspiring story or a funny tale featuring your LL to AKC Government Relations. You can submit a story about your own role as LL or on behalf of your club’s LL. Email LL stories to Patty Van Sicklen at pvs@akc.org by May 15.
Please stay safe and be well!
