Summer is fast approaching and many legislatures are increasing their pace as they wind down for the year or prepare for summer recesses.  Over the past month, we’ve seen activity on legislative issues across the country, and have also continued our outreach to continue educating lawmakers and engaging clubs in advocacy.

In this issue, we delve into the multifaceted landscape of new laws governing dog rescues, exploring how recent law changes in multiple states impact breed rescues.

We also join New York in celebrating “K9 Veterans Day”, which was declared last month as a  way to publicly honor the courageous contributions of K9 veterans and working dogs.

The AKC Government Relations staff continues to be out and about across the country, participating in such events as the AKC National Agility Championship and the Alabama Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus. In Tennessee, AKC was recognized by the Tennessee Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus for working with conservation partners to protect and advance sporting traditions in the state.

And finally, we delve into a contentious global issue, dissecting India’s recent ban on certain dog breeds and examining its implications for both canine welfare and societal perceptions of breed-specific legislation.

Also included are the latest updates on key legislation and regulatory issues around the country, and we encourage you to take a look and learn how you can help us take a stand for dogs and responsible dog ownership in your state and community.
