Agility: Just the Beginning
by Christopher Lee

I was coming home from school one sunny spring day about five years ago when I got a call from my mom. She said that we were going to get a new puppy. I didn't know what breed, or where from, but I was extremely excited. We met my mom at a local Sheltie breeder's home after she got off work. We ended up getting a little Sheltie puppy we named Mollee. It was like she chose us. We played with all the puppies and when we stopped they just walked away, but not Mollee, she was different. She stayed with us. That was how it all began.

When she was about nine months old, we took her to 4-H here in Starke County, Indiana. We didn't train Mollee any before this, she just took to everything naturally. Our trainers Bob, Terry, and Kim Holt noticed that she had a special drive for agility and so we continued being active in 4-H. We also knew a lady named Susan Crider that ran the local Humane Society who showed dogs. We started training with her and a few months later we were going to dog shows. As time went by I began to get involved in conformation and juniors and have shown in places like St. Louis, Chicago, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Indianapolis, and many, many more. We have four Shelties now. Two show in agility and obedience, the other two show in conformation. Mollee now has her Open Standard, Excellent Jumpers, and Novice Obedience titles. Our other dogs are on their way to titles. Mollee is a Canine Good Citizen and has passed her Therapy Dog test also.

I think that showing dogs is great because it gives me a place to go on weekends and after school instead of sitting at home watching TV. I have met many people my age and older that have helped me on this journey, and I would like to thank them all. I definitely plan to be involved in this sport for many years to come. Perhaps, some day, my experiences will lead to a career in dogs. As I said, agility is...just the beginning!
