A Message from Mari-Beth O'Neill blue
Mari-Beth ONeill Welcome Spring! After a long difficult winter for people in all parts of the country we look forward to the Spring shows and trials. We encourage you to write us with your ideas for the recognition of Juniors in AKC Events.

Have you ever stewarded at an AKC Event? This is a great way to learn and assist a club. Agility and Rally require multiple people to assist to successfully put on a trial, clubs are often seeking some assistance. Volunteer and learn more about how events are successfully run.

Please feel free to contact me with your thoughts and ideas!
Careers in Dogs blue
Interview with Phil Guidry, Senior Policy Analyst, AKC Government Relations Department

How did you first become involved in participating in AKC Events?
I call it a most positive form a peer pressure. My family had bred our second litter of Cocker Spaniels. We kept one puppy, a female, and she was wild! One day, when she was about six months old, my family and I took her to a fun match, trying to get her accustomed to a show setting. To try to get her to be calm, I had to run around with her before she would go into the ring so she could get rid of some of that extra energy. Our mentors saw me running around with her, and thought I should enter the junior handling class. I had no intention of ever doing that, but after about a half hour of them pestering me, I gave in and entered. Later that day, I was one of three kids in the juniors competition at this little fun match, and my dog and I won second place!

That’s all it took. After that, I was hooked!

A Girl’s Best Friend blue
By Kira Baugh
Like many other little girls, I had a dream to own a puppy of my very own. That dream didn’t come true until I was 10 years old. Thinking back, it was probably a good thing I didn’t receive a dog before then, because it would not have been Riley. I’d consider her my lifetime dog. There will never be another dog who clicks with me like she has. We work well together and we respect each other which make us a more connected team in and out of the ring. It will never matter to me that she was just a mutt and not a purebred, she’s the most amazing dog in my eyes and she will be in my heart forever.

Last July I traveled to Belgium for the 2013 European Open, the largest agility competition in the world, as a member of the AKC Agility Team. My six year old Shetland sheepdog, MACH3 Heartlake's Smooth Moves, Jenna, and I won our spot onto the AKC Team in May at the AKC International Team Tryouts.
