Message from Mari-Beth O'Neill Winter
Welcome to the first electronic version of the AKC Jr. News. This
format will allow us to send information to all Juniors more
frequently. We encourage you to tell your junior friends to
subscribe
to the newsletter if they have not already done so.
The AKC/Eukanuba National Invitational in Long Beach, California
had a wonderful turn out of Juniors, and we look forward to even more
participation at the January 15, 2005 event in Tampa, Florida.
Juniors who have met the first eligibility requirement--five wins
with competition--are posted
here.
We will remind you when to send in your transcripts.
More and more Juniors are competing in multiple events and
handling their dogs to more advanced titles. We encourage you to try
the Companion Events if you have not yet done so.
Superintendents may charge Juniors a fee to substitute a dog if
notice is printed in the Premium List for the event. Please be
advised that this is permissible.
We appreciate receiving your articles and photos to include in
the newsletter. Please feel free to
contact us with your thoughts and
ideas.

Agility with Cabin Creek Labs
by Madeline Greene
My name is Madeline Greene and I show and train Labrador
Retrievers. I cannot remember a time where I was not with my dogs.
When I was very little, I loved animals so much that my mom took me
to Ringling Brothers Circus. It was an experience that inspired me
to go home and begin training our three dogs, by putting them on the
couch, and telling them to stay. One at a time they could come down
but the others had to wait their turn to do an obstacle course made
out of brooms and chairs. One of my mom's best friends, Jan Norton,
started agility with my dog Sierra's brother. Jan told my mom about
Kanosak K9 training. Cathy Fleury, the agility teacher believed in
me enough to train me and Sierra (Sierras Unlimited OAJ AX). I was
only 7 at the time. I was the only child training at that facility
at the time in agility.

Winning Isn't Everything
by Emily Bisso
I love games, and I love competition.
However, lately sometimes I wonder if a slighty edgier attitude
of "winning is everything" is becoming the norm in Juniors today. I'm
not that far out of it--I only aged out a few months ago--and it
scares me sometimes how often this type of cutthroat intensity shows
up.
My mom has always been involved in dogs, and I've been to shows
since I was a little kid. And, of course, the second I was able to
physically show a dog, the lead was placed in my hand and I was
off....

Baloo's HT
by Tom Eldredge
This article is about my dog Baloo's herding up to his HT title.
Baloo is an Australian Shepherd - his registered name is Beauwood
Bear Necessity HT.
I wanted an Australian Shepherd for my very own dog because they
are good all around dogs. Baloo and I do flyball, obedience,
tracking, agility, junior showmanship and herding. I train and
handle Baloo myself.
During the winter we were out walking and I called and called and
called some more. Baloo usually comes right away. At that moment,
Baloo was in with the sheep as we soon found out. We tried to catch
him, but he was like smoke on the wind. Then our chubby goat stepped
in front of him and he was stopped long enough for us to catch him.
We realized that with Baloo's intensity it was time to start some
serious training!

Rule Changes
|
 |
 |
The following changes to the Junior Showmanship Regulations will be
effective
January 1, 2005:
-Minimum age of participation will be 9;
-Classes will be divided into three age group: Junior 9-11;
Intermediate 12-14, and Senior 15-18;
-Competition will be required for the Best Junior Handler award.
These changes will allow Juniors closer in age to compete against
each other, as well as for more opportunities for success.
