St. Louis Herding Club

Double Duty Herding Dog at SLHC May Trial
May 5-6, 2007 - Purina Farms, outside St. Louis, Mo.

The St. Louis Herding Club (SLHC) held an AKC Sheep and Duck trial at Nestle Purina Farms the first weekend of May. A and B courses were offered on both sheep and ducks. Beautiful weather made for a great trial not only for the exhibitors but for the stock, volunteers and spectators, many of whom drifted to the trial from the AKC conformation show being held at Nestle Purina Farms' show facility the same weekend.

A special "crew" set out the B Course duck runs on Sunday. Ann Schallert and her young male Bouvier des Flandres, Int CH Blanton's Isidor CS TT RN CGC TDI (aka Izzy), carted the ducks out to the set-out person, Sandra Holmberg. Izzy was hitched to a cart while Anne directed him as they headed across the field. Izzy pulled the cart loaded with five ducks in a crate to the set out for every B course duck run. When they reached the set-out person, the ducks were transferred into the wire lift cage while Izzy was on a stay. Once the ducks were all in the cage, Izzy and Ann headed back to the stock holding area to load up again. They did a fine job, and the classes went off without a hitch. It was a pleasure to see one of our herding breeds showing off another talent for which he was bred. Izzy is currently showing in conformation and is in training for herding and carting. He is an obedient dog who does his job well. We hope he was awarded a lunch ticket, as all the other workers received. If not, he needs to renegotiate his contract!
