Materials Needed

Computers with internet access




  • Review the events that occurred in America on 9/11/2001. Hold a discussion with students to review the history of these events and the long term ramifications on our country.

Explicit Instruction/Teacher Modeling

  • State that the class will be exploring the role that dogs played in the 9/11 attacks and aftermath.
  • Ask: How did dogs assist at the World Trade Center site? Solicit answers, along with questions that students have about dogs’ roles in the aftermath of 9/11.


Guided Practice/Interactive Modeling

Independent Working Time

  • Summarize the roles of dogs during the 9/11 tragedy. How were they vital?

Review and Closing

  • Invite students to share their summaries.
