The American Kennel Club currently recognizes 196 breeds! With so many breeds to learn about, AKC Public Education has introduced a new program for children ages 8-13, however anyone is welcome to participate!

AKC Breed of the Week for Kids provides participants with a new breed each week about which they can learn. Children navigate through a variety of fun activities about the breed, before finally earning a sticker of the breed that they can add to their AKC Breed of the Week sticker chart!

    Would you like to learn more about dog sports? Junior Showmanship offers children between the ages of 9 and under 18 years of age an opportunity to develop their handling skills, learn about good sportsmanship, dogs, and dog shows. Juniors are judged on their ability to present, or handle, their dogs as they would in the breed ring.

    Juniors may also compete and earn titles on their dogs in many AKC Events. The Junior Recognition program awards points for participation in all AKC events and additional points for earning qualifying scores or placements. Learn about Obedience, Agility, Rally, Tracking, Hunt Tests, Herding, Field Trials, Earthdog, Lure Coursing, Coursing Ability and Coonhound Events in which all juniors are eligible to compete.

    Is this course intended for children?

    Yes, the AKC Breed of the Week for Kids is intended for children. It is ideal for children ages 8-13.  However, anyone is welcome to try it out! Children should have parent/guardian permission and supervision while taking part in this (and any online) activity.

    Is there a cost associated with AKC Breed of the Week for Kids?

    No! The AKC Breed of the Week for Kids is free and can be found on the AKC Canine College.

    How do I get an account on the AKC Canine College?

    Making an account is easy and should be completed by a parent or guardian. The child’s parent or guardian should follow the link to the website and place the AKC Breed of the Week course in their cart. During check out, the parent should enter their email information. Please do not enter information about the child, including an email.  That email will then be your AKC Canine College log in ID.  Upon completing the checkout process, you will receive an email that includes how to access your course.  If you need assistance, please email publiced@akc.org

    Will I automatically be enrolled in the next Breed of the Week course? 

    Yes! Once you have created your account on the AKC Canine College and taken the first course, you will automatically get notified when the next course is available, and it will be in your AKC Canine College account when you log in next.

    What if I decide that I no longer wish to participate?

    It is easy to unsubscribe. Simply email akccaninecollege@akc.org. They can help you.

    Should I be using the child’s name and email address for the AKC Canine College account?
    If the child is a minor, please use the parent or legal guardian’s name and email address to log in and sign up for the AKC Canine College.
