The American Kennel Club (AKC) is pleased to report that an amended version of House Bill 1818 was passed by the Texas Senate yesterday, May 25, 2021.
AKC and other allied animal interest groups support HB 1818 as amended by the Senate. As previously reported, Committee Substitute HB 1818 permits pet stores to source dogs and cats from certain licensed commercial breeders in addition to animal control agencies, animal shelters, and animal rescue organizations; and imposes additional reasonable quality requirements on pet stores.
The 2021 Texas legislative session will adjourn on Monday, May 31. With only a few working days remaining, the amended bill will be returned to the House for its concurrence in the Senate’s amendments or for the appointment of a conference committee to hammer out the differences between the versions of the bill passed by each chamber.
AKC Government Relations will continue to provide updates on developments from Austin as they warrant. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
