The American Kennel Club (AKC) is pleased to report the successful completion of Texas' 2009 Legislative Session. This year, many bills threatened the rights of responsible purebred dog breeders and owners in the Lone Start State, including mandatory spay/neuter, breed-specific, unreasonable breeder oversight, and ownership limit legislation. However, the legislature's adjournment on Monday, June 1 brought final defeat to these bills and a triumphant end to the long- and hard-fought session.
The AKC congratulates its Texas federation, the Responsible Pet Owners Alliance (RPOA), and all concerned Texans who encouraged their legislators to support the rights of responsible dog breeders and owners. The AKC assisted their advocacy efforts by issuing several legislative alerts, e-mailing tens-of-thousands of Texas dog owners, and contacting legislators with AKC's concerns.
