Dear AKC Delegates, Judges, Club Officers and Breeders,
The Oklahoma Board of Commercial Pet Breeders has issued proposed regulations for the commercial breeder law (SB 1712) that was passed by the Oklahoma legislature earlier this year. A copy of the proposed regulations can be found here. Although the regulations must reflect the underlying statute they enforce, these proposed regulations contain many problematic provisions that reach beyond the underlying statute and will cause needless and unintended harm to responsible dog owners and breeders.
Responsible dog owners and breeders are encouraged to attend the Board’s rules hearing, as well as to call and send letters or emails to the Board’s Executive Director to respectfully comment on the proposed regulations.
The AKC believes that breeding programs should be undertaken responsibly for the purpose of preserving breed characteristics and producing healthy, well-socialized purebred puppies. AKC strongly opposes the breeding of dogs by those who do so without regard for the dogs’ welfare. Any regulations promulgated by the Board of Commercial Pet Breeders should look to these ideals, without creating undue hardships for pet breeders throughout Oklahoma.
