Combined New Jersey Assembly Bills 4552/4385 seeks to prohibit the leasing of dogs and cats. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is concerned that as currently worded the bill may impact the ability of responsible breeders to enter into limited-term leases for the purposes of breeding. Such leases have historically been used by AKC’s preservationist breeders and enthusiasts in collaborating on future generations of purebred dogs.
The bill is expected to be voted on by the full Assembly tomorrow, Thursday, May 23.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: It is imperative that New Jersey residents contact the bill’s sponsors today and request that, prior to passage, they adopt an amendment that will specifically preserve the right of purebred dog fanciers and enthusiasts to engage in the leasing of dogs for the express and limited purpose of breeding.
