The Caddo Parish Commission recently voted 10-1 in favor of an ordinance requiring dogs to be spayed or neutered, despite concerns raised by the AKC and local residents.

The Ordinance will go into effect on July 1, 2022 for a period of two years. The parish will evaluate the ordinance’s effects after two years. Unless reenacted as a permanent ordinance, it will expire June 30, 2024.

The spay-neuter ordinance has exemptions for show animals, those with breeding permits and pets with a veterinarian’s statement saying the operation would hurt their health.  Read AKC’s previous alert for more information.

As the parish will be evaluating the effectiveness of the new ordinance, residents are encouraged to reach out to the Parish Commission with any concerns, while remaining compliant with the new law once it goes into effect.
