In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sept. 7, the City of Augusta announced that it will reconsider its dog breed ban at its next meeting that is scheduled for September 19th. Dog owners and interested members of the public should attend the meeting and encourage city council to repeal the breed ban.
City ordinance currently bans keeping a dog that is a Staffordshire terrier, American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, or any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of any of the above listed breeds.
AKC opposes breed-specific laws. Instead, we promote laws that declare dogs as dangerous based on specific actions and hold all dog owners accountable regardless of the breed they own.
