Since the introduction of CA AB 1634, a bill that makes spay/neuter mandatory for all dogs over 4 months unless the owner qualifies for an intact dog permit, AKC has been actively involved in an opposition campaign.
We thank the many individuals and clubs and organizations who have joined our opposition and sent letters, e-mails or calls to oppose this bill and those who attended the hearing in Sacramento on April 10. Because of our united voice, the bill did not get voted out of committee and a vote was postponed until another hearing on April 24. Immediately following that decision by the committee, AKC announced it will be sending 3 representatives to the April 24th hearing: Walter Bebout, Director of the AKC Canine Legislation department; Sarah Sprouse, Manager; and Stephanie Lane, former Director of the Canine Legislation department and current CA resident.
Please review the updates in the CA Action Box posted on the AKC website in the Top Stories section of our homepage and the letter sent to the committee considering the bill and to Governor Schwarzenegger by Ron Menaker, AKC Chairman of the Board. In addition, please see the letter sent to the committee by Dennis Sprung, AKC President and CEO.
We encourage you to continue visiting our website for the latest updates and announcements regarding this issue.
AKC thanks the many concerned dog owners who have contacted their legislators and the Assembly Business and Professions Committee. If you have sent emails or faxes, please follow up by mailing a hard copy of your letter to your Assemblymember – personalized letters have the strongest impact!!
We are also asking that fanciers and responsible dog owners take the time to visit their Assemblymember's office, either in the district or in Sacramento. To assist you with this, we have created a set of talking points that can be printed and left with your representative or his/her staff. Please print these points and personally deliver a copy to your representative's office.
