The Labrador Retriever is continually one of America’s most popular dog breeds. Its lovable nature, friendly and affectionate demeanor, and sociable personality make the Lab a top pick for many owners around the country.

Before bringing home a Lab, be sure to do your research on what it takes to own this pup, since all dogs are lifetime commitments. But once you do decide to add an adorable canine companion to your family, check out this list of perfect monikers for a Labrador Retriever name.

This word means “joyful” in Italian. As an option for your Lab, Allegra sums up the cheery and sweet nature of the breed.

French for “friend,” Amie would be an ideal choice to call your four-legged friend. After all, they’re likely to become your canine BFF, so why not give them a name befitting that status?

A Lab’s toothy canine grin is the external manifestation of the pup’s happy attitude. Felicity could be a great name for your puppy, since the word “felicity” indicates abundant joy.

The Canadian ancestor of modern retrievers, the St. John’s Dog helped Newfoundland fishermen bring in their catches every day. These water-loving pups were paddlers par excellence (and many Labs today still love aquatic activities like swimming and Diving). So if your dog is an avid water-goer, consider giving a nod to their predecessors by calling them Fisher.

Chocolate labs’ coats are as deep in hue as the richest brownie or fudge. Even though you should never feed your pup chocolate, the addictiveness of chocolate desserts makes it a good inspiration for a moniker.

A yellow Lab’s coat might be as rich in color as honey. And a pup as sweet as this sticky substance deserves an equally adorable name.

The St. John’s Dog was named after the capital of Newfoundland, where they worked on the water. Of course, a common nickname for John is “Jack,” which could also function as a name for your new pup.

Sure, Kiefer Sutherland, star of 24, was born in London. However, his parents are both Canadian, and the actor is proud of his Canadian heritage. What else has deep roots in Canada? The Lab, of course.

And Kiefer’s 24 character, Jack Bauer, has a penchant for saving others’ lives. Labs can also be heroes; some assist the police with their superior senses of smell or serve as explosive detection dogs.

This name harkens to the maple leaf: a symbol of Canada, the Lab’s country of origin. But this adorable moniker would surely suit a pup as sweet as your new addition.

Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, better known as the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, helped develop the modern Labrador. This Scottish nobleman began importing Labradors from Canada to the United Kingdom in the 19th century, part of a wave of aristocracy endorsing the breed. He crossed them with some of his own stock and built his own kennel. So why not celebrate this lord’s elaborate surname by dubbing your Lab “Monty”?

One of America’s most famous Labs is Sully H.W. Bush, recipient of the 2019 AKC Paw of Courage. The service dog served the late President George H.W. Bush, also a Navy veteran, and provided companionship and assistance in Bush’s life. Pay homage to this pup’s honorable contribution by making him your dog’s namesake.
