AKC's Government Relations Department has learned that the Rockwood, Tennessee, City Council will discuss the topic of vicious dogs at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, July 21st, 2008. This meeting will be held at 7:00PM (Eastern) in the City Council Room, 110 Chamberlain Avenue in Rockwood. All concerned Rockwood dog owners are encouraged to attend Monday's meeting and participate in any discussion.

The American Kennel Club supports reasonable, enforceable, non-discriminatory laws to govern the ownership of dogs. We support laws that: establish a fair process by which specific dogs are identified as “dangerous” based on stated, measurable actions; impose appropriate penalties on irresponsible owners; and establish a well-defined method for dealing with dogs proven to be dangerous. The AKC strongly opposes any legislation that determines a dog to be “dangerous” or “vicious” based on specific breeds or phenotypic classes of dogs.

The Government Relations Department has learned that the discussion will be open to all potential topics regarding vicious/dangerous dogs, including breed-specific legislation.
