This morning, California Assembly Bill 1634 was considered by the California State Senate. After an initial vote of five in favor and 18 opposed, the bill was put "on call." Because the bill's floor manager, Sen. Padilla, did not have votes to pass the bill, this legislative procedure allowed the leadership to call this bill for another vote before the end of the day's session.

Throughout the first consideration of the bill, Sen. Padilla incorrectly stated several times that AKC was neutral on AB 1634. AKC's staff contacted Sen. Padilla's staff after his floor statements and reinforced AKC's opposition.

Later, on call, the California State Senate voted 5-27 against Assembly Bill 1634. However, this is not the end of AB 1634. The bill has been granted "Reconsideration" pursuant to Senate Rule 43, which means it can be brought up for another vote next week.

The American Kennel Club continues to oppose Assembly Bill 1634, and encourages all California residents to contact their state Senator and urge them to vote no on the bill when it is reconsidered. (To find your California State Senator, click here.)
