The AKC works with non-AKC service and sports organizations to recognize the titles that AKC-registered dogs earn in their programs. This includes the AKC Therapy Dog program and the AKC Search & Rescue program. AKC also recognizes titles of the Barn Hunt Association (BHA); North American Diving Dogs (NADD); the North American Flyball Association (NAFA); and UpDog Challenge disc organization. For information on how to apply, go to: AKC Title Recognition Program. Read on to meet All-American Dogs who are recent achievers in these sports.

AKC Therapy Dog Title

The AKC Therapy Dog Title program offers titles based on the amount of service that a therapy team has volunteered, giving more dogs the opportunity to earn the honor. Dogs also must be certified by an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization. The titles are:

600 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Supreme (THDS) title.

400 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished (THDD) title.

200 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (THDX) title.

100 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (THDA) title.

50 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog (THD) title.

10 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Novice (THDN) title.

Congratulations to the All American Dogs who have earned the Therapy Dog Supreme title, having made 600 visits:

Guinness Of Highland Point THDS owned by Dottie & Foster Arnett of Knoxville, TN

The Arnetts adopted Guinness on March 3, 2017, through Adopt a Golden Knoxville. They think he was about 2 years old when they got him, and “he was wild,” Dottie said. She worked with a trainer and after only a few weeks Guinness was “deemed a well-behaved boy.” The trainer suggested Guinness and Dottie apply to HABIT (Human Animal Bond in Tennessee) to become a therapy team. Guinness passed the tests with flying colors, and they began their journey.

So far, they have logged more than 1,600 visits and 1,200 hours, volunteering at several different facilities per week: East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, University of Tennessee Medical Center (a level one trauma center), the Cancer Institute, two trauma floors, pediatric intensive care, Comfort Care (hospice), the Knox County 911 Dispatch Center, and Ruff Reader.

Guinness has brought happiness and joy to thousands of people. He has his own baseball trading cards that Dottie and Foster hand out by the hundreds. “He really is a rock star in his own right, and I am his driver,” Dottie said. “He is greeted with delight by the nurses saying, ‘It’s Guinness Day!’ as he trots down the hallways. “We are blessed to have this mission, and he and I love what we do,” Dottie said. Guinness was awarded the Therapy Dog Supreme award on Oct. 10, 2023.

Gillespie’s Buttercup THDS CGC owned by Castle Rock PD, Officer Scott Gillespie, of Castle Rock, CO

Buttercup has been working alongside officers in the Town of Castle Rock for more than three years. She was rescued and trained at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office – Paws and Stripes College before she was donated to Castle Rock Police Department. Buttercup was the first therapy dog to be paired with a school resource officer in entire The State of Colorado. She has served regularly in more than 30 different schools in the Douglas County School District, in town facilities, and has visited locations throughout the state for trainings and demonstrations of how police therapy dogs work.

Buttercup is widely known within the surrounding community, but she is especially appreciated by the students at Castle View High School where she spends most of her days. Students view her as an honorary second mascot, regularly visit her, assist with her ongoing training, and even make dresses for her to wear to school dances.

Outside of school, Buttercup has visited adult special needs populations, Boy Scout troops, pre-schools, summer youth police academy and many other events. Around the CRPD she makes regular visits to the dispatch center, command staff meetings, and assists with providing support to officers who have been involved in critical incidents. Buttercup is also extremely helpful during investigations into child abuse or neglect and has worked alongside detectives to help secure statements from child victims.

She has taken the Castle Rock Community completely by storm and was the primary influence behind the addition of three more therapy dog teams to the police department – including our newest dog that is assigned to the mental health co-responder team. Her contributions to Castle Rock have exceeded every expectation, and she is truly valued and beloved by all who meet her.

Josephine Rock Star THDS and Ruby Hoose THDS CGCA owned by Richard & Pamela Hoose of Pinckney, MI

Richard and Pamela retired in early 2014 and started serious training and socialization with Josephine, now 11 years old, in preparation for her Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) therapy dog test, which she passed in March 2015.

Ruby, now 9 years old, came along in June 2015. The Hooses raised her to follow in Josephine’s paw prints, and she has been an ATD Certified Therapy Dog since April 2016, shortly after her first birthday. Ruby was unofficially doing therapy dog work with elementary school children reading to her since she was 7 months old.

Weekly reading programs at elementary schools started for Josephine in 2015. Soon, weekly visits to the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI, were added. In 2015 they started a weekly summer reading program at the Pinckney Community Public Library and finished their ninth year of this program last summer, only missing the summer of 2020 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Ruby’s therapy dog career began with weekly visits to the VA Hospital and the Pinckney Library summer program with Josephine. In early 2016 they added St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (now Trinity Health) in Brighton to their weekly schedule. In January 2018, they added weekly visits to the main Trinity Health Hospital in Ann Arbor and in 2019, weekly visits at Wellbridge of Pinckney, a senior facility. They further expanded their calendar with monthly visits to Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Community College for student wellness as well as exam week visits to the University of Michigan. Through the years they have also participated in various library events, home school groups, a Selective Mutism Camp, traveling Vietnam War Memorials, cancer walks and more.

Pamela and Richard are certified ATD therapy dog handlers for both Josephine and Ruby. Richard is also an ATD Tester/Observer for therapy dog certification, for which Ruby serves as the neutral dog.

Kira XIX THDS owned by Linda Saxby of Cypress, TX

Kira was 2 or 3 months old when Linda adopted her from a rescue organization. Right away Linda knew Kira was something special as she was the sweetest and calmest dog she had ever had.

Before she was a year old, Linda worked with Kira to earn her CGC so they could volunteer with a therapy dog group that made weekly visits to schools where third graders read to the dogs. A couple of years later, they joined another therapy group, Faithful Paws of Houston, and started regular visits to assisted living and memory care homes, as well as one-time visits to places such as the airport or to schools for finals week.

As Kira has grown older (she’s 12.5 years old now), she and Linda do just two visits a week – one to the elementary school they have been visiting since 2012 and another to the assisted living home where Linda’s 100-year-old mother lives. On Nov. 16, 2023, Kira completed her 600th visit at Spring Cypress Senior Living and earned her AKC Therapy Dog Supreme title. “I’m so very proud of her!” Linda said. “She’s the best teammate ever and has opened up a whole new way of volunteering for me.”

Koko THDS CGC owned by Steven Herz of Scotch Plains, NJ

Koko was one of the AKC’s six so-called First Titlists to receive the original THD therapy dog title on June 30, 2011, and the first All American Dog to receive that title. Koko logged more than 700 career visits at 42 different facilities in five New Jersey counties, including two medical centers, public and special needs schools, nursing/assisted living, libraries, universities, and veterans’ campuses.

On July 1, 2014, she was one of the first group of therapy dogs nationally to receive the AKC’s new top tier THDD (Therapy Dog Distinguished) title. Among her posthumous honors beginning in 2015 were our organization Creature Comfort Pet Therapy’s first Lifetime Achievement Award, the AKC Canine Good Citizen title, a Certificate of Merit from the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association as a finalist for the New Jersey Animal Hall of Fame, and a double memorial (outside and inside the main terminal) at Bangor International Airport in Maine, where she worked during summers as a Maine Troop Greeter, the only therapy dog from outside Maine to be so honored.

Koko was posthumously awarded the THDS on Dec. 19, 2023.

Hoot N. Holler THDS CGC owned by Gayle R Bragg of Columbia, MD

Hoot is the same generous “empath” at almost 9 years old that he was when he started his journey in 2016 to become a therapy dog. He was born March 29, 2015, and he lives in Columbia, MD, with his “little sister” Annie.

“The house is never dull with these two – there’s always a “hoot ’n Annie” going on!” Gayle said.

When he was 1 year old, Hoot was certified with Fidos for Freedom and continues to be an active member of the organization. Hoot’s favorite visits are schools, the Ronald McDonald House, military veteran support groups and centers, and listening to children read as part of Fidos “DEAR” program – Dogs Educating and Assisting Reading.

Hoot enjoys visits to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he is a member of the Red Cross Animal Visitation Team. He loves to see the active-duty patients, veterans, families, and staff – having a great time wearing costumes and smiling for cameras at special holiday photo shoots – and happily climbs into the car to support the ARC Service to the Armed Forces events as a furry ambassador.

In 2021, the last of Hoot’s goals became a reality. He was certified as an Animal Assisted Crisis Response Dog for HOPE – an organization whose mission is to provide comfort and encouragement to individuals affected by crises and disasters. Hoot has deployed from Maine to North Carolina and places in between over the past two years. On Dec. 19, 2023, Hoot received his Therapy Dog Supreme title in Columbia, MD.

Giuseppe Of East 3rd THDS CGCA CGCU owned by Francina & Joseph Baldi of Frederick, MD

Giuseppe is 6 years old and has been a member of the Baldi family since he was a puppy. Early in his training, Francina and Joseph were told that he had a wonderful temperament and would make an amazing therapy dog. He passed his CGC test on July 14, 2018, and on Oct. 28, 2018, he passed the test for the Go Team Therapy Dogs and earned his Urban CGC and Community CGC.

Since that time, he has kept busy with his volunteer activities. Giuseppe spends time each week visiting classes in Frederick County Public Schools. Most of these visits are with children who have special needs or behavioral issues. His favorite visits are with struggling readers.

A visit to a doctor’s office paved the way for visits with people getting their vaccinations during the pandemic. He and other members of Go Team Therapy Dogs spent many hours each week providing comfort to children and their parents. These visits continued for almost two years. They were even featured in an article by the CDC Foundation.

Another favorite visit is to the courthouse where Giuseppe and other Go Team pups visit the staff and sometimes have found themselves providing comfort in the court room. Giuseppe teamed with other Go team dogs in 2023 and again in 2024 to attend the Tim Tebow Foundation Night to Shine.

Giuseppe visits nursing homes and provides comfort during crisis events. He is also a HosPet where he spends time providing comfort to hospice patients and their families. He completed his 600th visit on Aug. 24, 2022, at a Covid vaccine clinic and his 1,000th visit on Jan. 25, 2024, at Governor Thomas Johnson HS.

Rotton Weiler THDS owned by Jennifer Tolbert of Valley Grand, AL

Rotton is a “spoiled rotten” Rottweiler mix that Jennifer met in April 2017 when the 8-week-old pup was rescued from a rural landfill by Wannabe Rescued Inc., a dog rescue organization that Jennifer belonged to.

After overcoming multiple health issues, the little pup passed her CGC test right before her first birthday. She blossomed into a therapy dog extraordinaire, visiting hospitals and nursing homes. She also became the official “spokes dog” for Wannabe Rescued Inc.

Through 2020 – 2022 of the COVID pandemic, her hospital visits brought comfort and joy to patients and healthcare workers during those difficult times. There were many emotionally and physically exhausted hospital staff who would sit on the floor crying and hugging Rotton until they could pull themselves together and go back to taking care of the patients.

Rotton completed her 600th visit in January 2023, a few days after a devastating tornado came through town and destroyed multiple homes and businesses. She brought comfort to the displaced citizens at a makeshift supply distribution center, where she was also helping Wannabe Rescued distribute dog food to the displaced families.

Congratulations also to these dogs for earning the THDS title:

RATCH

A True Token Of Royalty RN NAJ BCAT RATCH CZ8S DN CGCA CGCU TKA owned by Tiffany Flores of North Las Vegas, NV

Prince is a 5-year-old mixture of Border Collie, Australian Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog, and Collie. He was initially a service dog prospect but became so much more to Tiffany. He does everything with passion and enthusiasm. Tiffany feels that he’s the perfect sports dog for a novice handler, as he is one of the smartest dogs she has ever met – “all bias aside!”

Tiffany’s goal with Prince is to try as many AKC sports as they can. So far, they haven’t found one he doesn’t like. He competes in FastCAT, rally, Barn Hunt, scent work, agility, dock diving, and many more.

Prince earned his first championship title – RATCH – at their home club in Las Vegas on Feb. 25, 2023. He earned his RATCHX on Oct. 22, 2023 – just one day before Tiffany’s birthday. “It was the best gift I could have received. I’m so lucky to have found this sweet boy and I’m eternally grateful to him every day for being my light at the end of the tunnel,” she said.

DM

Schwarz’s Jackson Slim CD BN RM FCAT SWM SCME SIME SEME DE DM TKN owned by Patricia M Schwarz of Floresville, TX

Slim joined the Schwarz household at approximately 10 months of age after a rocky start in life. Patricia has never regretted trusting her gut and giving a home to a puppy in whom she saw a lot of potential. Slim has become her constant companion, and they participate in several AKC sports.

Slim likes swimming and dock diving during the hot summers in South Texas when it is impossible to enjoy other outdoor sports. He earned his Dock Master title at K9 Water World in San Marcos, Texas, on May 20, 2023. The picture shows him relaxing in his crate between splashes with his DM title ribbon proudly displayed on the door.

Gustopher Walken BCAT DM CGCA CGCU TKA owned by Alyssa Mignon Lawlis of Calimesa, CA

Gus came to Alyssa as a foster puppy and “pretty much instantly weaseled his way into never leaving,” she said.

He had a rough beginning and lacked confidence and was afraid of humans. To help Gus start conquering his demons, Alyssa took him to obedience classes at I Heart K9, which not only got his obedience on point, but also taught him to work through his fears. This is where dog sports were recommended as another way to build his confidence.

Classes at High Desert Dog Sports were what really started to bring Gus out of his shell. When they finally tried dock diving last year, it was clear there was nothing else he’d rather do (except maybe rat sports, but Alyssa has only recently found them). While other sports they tried required an extra person (be it judge or additional handler) to be close, thanks to his solid obedience work and love for squeaky balls, dock diving was just Gus, his ball, his human, and the water. He quickly launched himself right out of the Junior and Senior distances and into Master. He earned his DM on Sept. 29, 2023, at High Desert Dog Sports.

“Words can’t express how proud I am of this dog or how grateful I am to I Heart K9 and High Desert Dog Sports for helping me get him to this point,” Alyssa said. “I can’t wait to see what he does this dock diving season.”

FDCH

Honey Badger Don’T Care RN FDC AXP AJP OFP CAX FCAT2 ACT2 ACT2J FDCH RATS DS DJA HDS CGCA CGCU TKA ATT VHMA VSWB owned by Kimberly Dickson & Jesse Blanchard of Stanfordville, NY

When Kimberly and Jesse adopted Badger as a puppy, they had no idea of the journey this little dog would take them on. His enthusiasm, drive, and desire to learn has resulted in participating in multiple sports, ranging from Barn Hunt to dock diving and agility. Badger even became a national champion in Hydrodash with NADD last year.

But most recently they added flyball to the list. They started training in 2022, and Badger picked it up quickly. By 2023 he was competing in tournaments with Infurno Flyball team. They travel throughout the northeast with Infurno, constantly striving to improve and continue growing as a team. Badger absolutely loves the energy, fast pace and getting to chase balls and tug all day. His humans love the camaraderie and memories made with a team of people and dogs all playing a sport they love together.

“The team aspect of flyball makes it unique and adds to the fun,” Kimberly said. In his first year of playing, Badger earned five NAFA flyball titles, including his FDCH (Flyball Dog Champion) on April 29, 2023, in Greenfield, MA. “We’re grateful to have found this sport and this team and look forward to many more years of playing flyball!”
