Agility

Congratulations to this dog on earning the Agility Grand Champion title:

AGCH MACH12 Mighty Milo Vogel MXG3 PDS MJB4 PJS MFG TQX T2B5 owned by Kathleen Vogel of Bay City, MI

“Our wonderful Mighty Milo has been such a joy to our family and a quick learner from the moment that we got him as a puppy in 2016,” Kathleen said. “Lucky for us, we were asked to take him in when his first family wasn’t able to keep him.

“Weighing only 6 pounds, Milo has been an exciting and energetic partner in agility since he started trialing at 16 months. He loves the sport and has been to every AKC Agility National and AKC Agility Invitational event since 2019 with this December 2023 being his fifth invitational.”

Mighty Milo earned his AGCH at a trial in Midland, MI. “Because of Milo and this exciting sport of agility we have had the opportunity to travel and meet so many wonderful new friends!” Kathleen said.

MACH Lily Pinto RI FDC MXB MJB NF T2B FCAT ACT2 SCN THDN CGC TKA owned by Vicky Pinto of Kingsport, TN

“Lily is a 5-year-old mixed breed who loves to learn,” Vicky said. “She has been a pleasure to train and works so hard for me in any activity we do. Lily has titles in Fast Cat, Scent Work, Rally, Barn Hunt, Trick Dog, Therapy, and Agility. The only thing she does not like is swimming. However, she does enjoy floating around the pool on the stand-up paddle board.

“This has been a learning experience for both of us, as Lily is my first agility dog.” On March 3, 2023, at the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of Middle Tennessee agility trial in Murfreesboro, Lily got her final 20 points and her 20th QQ to earn her MACH.

“Our most recent challenge has been to qualify for the AKC Agility Nationals. Last year we were 13 points short of qualifying. So, this year I have been determined,” Vicky said. “In July, at an agility trial in Franklin, TN, we got the remaining points we needed. Nationals here we come!”

MACH Riley Hladik MXB MJS XF T2B owned by Lori Hladik of Lakewood, CO

Riley is Lori’s second agility dog, and she earned her MACH on March 10, 2023, at the Palmer Divide Agility Club in Elizabeth, CO. Lori started training Riley when she was about 8 months old, with Morganne Wagoner-Perry of Team Spirit Agility.

“Riley is my fun ‘hog dog.’ She loves to hike, swim, do disc and agility, and is friendly with every human and every dog!” Lori said. “She has been a joy, a fantastic companion, smart and a blast to train! Riley is my little love and I’ve learned a lot about agility with her.”

MACH Wushu MXB MJS owned by Sue Vold of Leavenworth, KS

Wushu is an All American that was rescued at 9 months of age. “His vet paperwork came with a bold statement across the top, TOO WILD TO EVALUATE,” Sue said. “We worked through his challenges with patience. It took a while for him to trust being touched and loved on, but once he figured it out, he craved more. When Wu was introduced to agility, it became his happy place, and it remains that way still.”

“In the beginning, agility was all about running, barking, and bounding over obstacles. Much to my (and some judges’) dismay there were flyoffs on the A frame and teeter, which simulated Olympic ski jumping, yet he came up barking and ready to go with each dismount. Wu was a wild man that loved the rush the agility course offered – he still does. He approaches the arena nonchalant but once he gets started, it’s game on. Occasionally he surprises me with a singular glide over the A frame -launching from and landing in the contact, but barking his way through a course remains his thing.”

He earned his MACH on April 15, 2023, in Blue Springs, MO. at All Star Dog Sports and has qualified for his second Nationals appearance.

MACH Blitzen MXB MJB OF T2B ACT2 owned by Kimberlee Wojick of Warwick, RI

Blitzen, an 8 ½ years old hound mix, was adopted by Kimberlee when he was 1 year old. He began trialing in late 2018, and despite the global pandemic and starting as a Novice A dog, Blitzen obtained his MACH on April 22, 2023, at the Scottish Terrier Club of New England agility trial at The Fieldhouse in Northford, CT.

“Blitzen is a dog who needed confidence building and structured training and has thrived in the agility world,” Kimberlee said. “He is a fan favorite at agility trials, living up to his reindeer name with his enthusiastic jumping style.”

MACH Ontargets It’s A Matter Of Principle MXS MJB MFB T2B SWN owned by Stephen P. Glasser & Donna K. Arnett of Nicholasville, KY

“As I was growing older, and looking for a slower agility dog, my wife convinced me that a dog with shorter legs would be easier for me to keep up with. Wow! was she ever wrong,” Stephen said. “Integrity is a Border Collie/Papillon mix. Fortunately, it turned out that he is extremely talented and trainable and can work independently at good distance which does allow me to keep up.

“Integrity has a remarkable sense of loyalty and honesty. He is incredibly intelligent and alert, attentive to his surroundings. He is a quick learner and his agility, drive, and athleticism make him an excellent competitor in dog sports and scent trials. His energy seems boundless, and he’s always ready for playtime or any mentally stimulating activities. He enjoys learning new things, showing off his versatility and eagerness to please.

“He likes spending quality time with his pack, although mostly he likes being with me. Whether it’s a long walk in the park, a game of catch, or simply lounging on the couch together, Integrity is happiest when surrounded by those he loves.”

MACH Belle Sams Chandler MXS MJB MXF T2B2 ACT2 TKI owned by Sharon Chandler of Roanoke, TX

“When I rescued her Belle was scared of everything,” Sharon said. “We went for our first obedience training, and they suggested agility to increase her confidence. She loved it but at first would shut down seeing anyone but me. One time she stopped on top of the A-Frame and peed from fright! I was told that she would never be able to compete in AKC because of her fears. We both loved this sport, so we changed to another gym where we met our precious coach, Dresden Graff. He believed in us and said that we could do anything! To this day he keeps us strong, and Belle barks in excitement as we go to weekly lessons.

“Belle was over 2 when we competed in our first trial, and we have (almost) never stopped! She reached Masters right as COVID shut things down. We got back in gear when things opened up and were thrilled to run again!

“Things went great until August 2022 when her ACL tore. In October, Belle had TPLO surgery for it. She loves agility but I wasn’t sure she would be able to run again but by the first of February 2023 the doctor told us to return to sports. Supported by all of our agility friends we came back and even Q’d in her first event! My precious Belle, at age 7, was awarded her MACH on May 14, 2023, in Belton, TX,” Sharon said.

“We love running and I celebrate at the end of every run no matter qualification because it is such a blessing that we get to enjoy this sport. Having my sweet Belle by my side is a true gift from God. We rescued each other – ask for the bigger story to find how she rescued me. Thank you AKC for caring about all the dogs.”

MACH Lucy Keltner MXB MJB XF T2B CGC TKA owned by Bill Keltner of Naples, FL

Lucy, a Cocker Spaniel mix, is 7 years old, and the Keltners got her when she was 1 year old. “She had had very little social interaction,” Bill said. “Needless to say, we had a lot of catching up to do with social skills, riding in a car, approaching people, climbing stairs and just everyday living.

“We lived on a river and the first indication that she was gifted in agility was that she loved to walk on the bulkhead! From there I put a 2×4 up on blocks and she mastered walking on that, so I built her a teeter-totter. One experiment led to another and before we knew it we had entered the uncharted territory called dog agility,” Bill said.

Bill and Lucy continue to train multiple times a month at Bratty Paws in Punta Gorda, FL. “Lucy is truly a blue ribbon collector,” Bill said. On May 19 she earned her first MACH. “Lucy loves agility training as well as therapy work, doing tricks at nursing homes, children’s homes, and community events. She can be seen at the end of our driveway performing for an audience of visiting grandchildren. Lucy is a sweet family dog as well. When not working in agility, she snuggles with my wife and keeps check on both our whereabouts.”

MACH Hopper Grace MXB MJB MXF T2B CGC owned by Malinda & Austin Kelleher of Durham, NC

Hopper Grace is a 5-year-old All-American who is believed to be a Beagle/Husky mix. Hopper was adopted from Pawfect Match in Holly Springs, NC, when she was 5 months old. “Hopper is my first agility dog, and she taught me so much about the sport. When we started competing, Hopper did a lot of zooming and sniffing. My goal was to simply get our Open titles. I never thought a MACH was possible for us. Once we learned how to work together, Hopper proved that she is an amazing athlete,” Malinda said.

“Her motto is ‘run fast and bark loud.’ She loves to tell me how much she disapproves of stopping on the table. She loves showing off her running dog walk. Hopper has a ton of drive on the agility field, but at home she loves snuggling under the covers (she thinks agility trials should start a little later in the day). Hopper is my heart dog, and we look forward to AKC nationals and hopefully Westminster next year.”

MACH Zola Lexi MXB MJB NF T2B owned by Brandy Martinez of Albuquerque, NM

Zola was approximately 4 months old when Bradny adopted her from the Westside City Shelter in Albuquerque, NM, in 2014. She had been found in a trash bag on the side of road and taken to the shelter.

“Zola was my first dog as an adult and my first agility dog. She didn’t start agility until she was about 3 years old. I had seen agility equipment at a dog park and decided to look into classes. We started agility foundations class in Las Cruces, NM, at Las Cruces Dog Sports with Kim Fuqua. Zola always enjoyed jumping on and off things such as park benches and jungle gyms; she was fearless,” Brandy said.

“She had a slow start to agility as her nose often led her astray from the course or stopped her dead in her tracks to investigate a scent. However, with persistence she became more focused and fell in love with the sport. Once we started trialing at age 4 she quickly started earning titles and developed a fan club.”

At age 8, in March 2022, Zola was 2 QQ’s away from her MACH and preparing for AKC Nationals when she sustained a cruciate ligament tear. She underwent TPLO surgery, rehabbed her knee, returned to agility and earned her MACH title May7, 2023, at the Sandia Dog Obedience Club trial. “I am beyond proud of Zola’s accomplishments, I couldn’t have asked for a better partner to learn this sport with.”

MACH6 PACH Dixie Belle Black CD BN MXS3 MJB3 MXP3 MXPB MJP3 MJPB PAX XF T2B BCAT TKN owned by Jennifer Sumpter of Algonquin, IL

“Dixie is a 10-year-old rescue who often greets you with a shoe in her mouth, tail wagging, and expressive eyes full of love,” Jennifer said. “She’s a laid-back girl who loves naps in the sun, going for walks and giving lots of wet kisses to special friends. Dixie is my first agility dog and has been an amazing teammate and companion.

“She may not be the fastest dog in the ring, but she is certainly one of the most consistent when it comes to clean runs and earning QQ’s. After achieving MACH6 in 2022 we moved down to the 12” Preferred class to prolong her agility career with less impact on her joints. It took her a little while to get a good rhythm jumping a lower height, but once she figured it out, she seemed to really enjoy the new preferred class.”

“We have a special bond; Dixie is my heart dog. She was diagnosed with cancer in November of 2022, and I feared our time together in the agility ring was going to end abruptly, but thankfully that hasn’t been the case. She’s been receiving chemo every three weeks since the beginning of the year, and in April she earned her PACH in true Dixie style,” Jennifer said. “We’re always chasing points so taking a moment to perch on the a-frame is nerve wracking as every second counts, but I wouldn’t trade her signature move for anything. Dixie continues to be in remission but we’re taking it slow these days. When we do trial, I cherish every moment with this amazing girl. Walking up to the start line is a little emotional for me as I never know if it will be our last time.”

Dixie has competed at the NAC twice, each time making three clean runs. She’s also been a registered therapy dog and recently retired after nine years of service.

She earned her PACH on April 2, 2023, at the Fox Valley Dog Training Club trial held at Car-Dun-Al Obedience Dog Training Club in Huntley, IL.

PACH Alfonzo Frankie Francis MXP5 MXPS MJP6 MJPS PAX NFP ACT2 owned by Angela Francis of Lavonia, GA

Alfie is a 6-year-old All-American who was adopted from Soul Dog Rescue and Rehab in Fort Wayne, IN at 12 weeks.

Angela never considered competing with him. Agility was just a way to give an outlet to a competing to a crazy puppy needing a job. Neither having had any agility experience prior, they have worked together toward their AKC PACH title for two and a half years with the support of husband and “Dad” Doug.

Team Alfie finally earned their PACH at the Peach Blossom Cluster in Perry, GA, surrounded by all their agility friends who have helped make this title possible, and they have also qualified for AKC Nationals 2024!

MACH PACH Hawk Blair MXG MJS MXP6 MXPS MJP5 MJPS PAX2 MFB TQX MFPS TQXP T2B3 CGC TKI owned by Trish Blair of Ferndale, CA

Hawk was picked up as a stray wandering the streets in a Northern California town with two other dogs. He was pulled from the shelter by a rescue group looking for a foster placement for him. Trish was looking for a companion for the dog she already had and “agreed to give it a go.”

“Things didn’t go well. He wasn’t bonding with me at all. He hid outside much of the time, terrified of everything, including me. He wouldn’t walk through doors, wouldn’t let me touch him. Being a long-time dog owner, I tried everything I could think of to bring him around. After a couple of months, I had lost hope and planned to return him to the local rescue group, as he wasn’t happy.

“A random conversation with a coworker changed the course of his future. She was telling me about her weekend at an agility trial. Bingo! Maybe Hawk needed a job, something to focus on other than his own fear. We took classes. He began to gain confidence and relate to me and to others. He started to look to me for guidance. Over the next year, he transformed. He’s become a great agility dog, earning a MACH and a PACH. He’s a certified therapy dog, visiting our local college and university. He has his Canine Good Citizen (CGC). Now, Hawk loves everyone, and everyone loves Hawk,” Trish said.

“He’s taught me never to give up on a rescue dog. Time and patience changed Hawk’s life.”

Coursing Ability (CAX)

Congratulations to these dogs for earning their first CAX titles:

“Charley is 7 years old and she has been the best partner in crime to explore all kinds of dog sports with!” Samantha said. “She loves both Fast CAT and CAT. She earned her CAX title in Bush, LA, on March 26, 2023, running with our favorite company, Black Knights Coursing.”

Shadow Handsome Mutt BN FDC NA NAJ CAX DCAT ACT1 ACT2J CGCA CGCU TKA VHMA owned by Elaine Monique Flores of Houston, TX

Shadow was rescued from the San Diego Humane Society when he was 4 months old in June of 2018. He was the first dog Elaine owned as an adult, recommended by her psychiatrist because she struggled to live alone. “He became my legitimate ESA who supported me through my first year of teaching and master’s program,” Elaine said. “We’d go out for pack walks and dog training and were outside a lot – he kept me sane. In our second year together, we completed the 52 Hike Challenge and the San Diego 5 Peak Challenge where we were a part of a community of hikers – both human and dog- we loved it.

“In late 2020 we moved to Houston for work where the elevation was hard to find, and the weather isn’t the best year-round. I stayed home a lot, to the point where my mental health was on the decline again. I found Give Us Paws who trained Shadow to be my task-trained psychiatric service dog and I was able to navigate the new city a bit better.” That same year Elaine learned that mixed breed dogs could participate in AKC dog sports through the AKC Canine Partners program and entered their “gateway dog sport,” CAT, in September 2021.

“I was nervous about our first run, wondering if Shadow would chase the bunny or not. But once he was on the field it was very clear that he LOVED this game. People I met that day said he looked like a lion, and he tracked the bunny and ran beautifully. After that, I knew I needed to enter more runs not just for the title but because Shadow looked so happy doing it. The more we did the more I was willing to travel for the sport and realized the CAX title was more than doable. We drove to Celina, TX, once and Bush, LA twice just because it was such a great time,” Elaine said.

“CAT not only gave Shadow an outlet, but it helped us find a new community and let us find and try: Fast Cat, Barn Hunt, Tracking, Obedience, Agility, and an overall love of working together.”

Shadow earned his CAX on March 26, 2023, through the Boxer Club of Louisiana.

Congratulations also to these dogs for earning the CAX title:

Rally

Congratulations to these dogs on their first RACH titles:

RACH Whirley Whirlwind Wind of Dorian VCD2 UD BN GO VER RM3 RAE3 MX MXJ XF SCN SBN RATS TKI owned by Sue Kotlarek of Romulus, MI

On March 4, 2023, at the Toledo Kennel Club, Whirley earned her RACH title. “We enjoy competing in Rally and are currently working on a RACH2,” Sue said. “Whirley enjoys competing in ALL sports: tracking, obedience, scent work and agility. We adopted her from the Dearborn Animal shelter in 2019. She was flown up from Florida before Hurricane Dorian.”

PACH RACH Jesse Belle RM2 RAE2 MX MXB MXJ MJB MXP4 MXPB MJP3 MJPB PAX XF TK owned by Cindy Stewart-Mackes of Pedricktown, NJ

“JesseBelle retired from agility at the age of 13 but was not ready to just chill at home. So, we gave Rally a try and boy did she run with it. She was a fast learner and in no time we qualified for Rally Nationals in 2022 and in 2023. She made the Top 10 in her class in 2022 and was also the oldest dog, at 13 ½, that year.”

She was born and raised a performance dog. “There is lots of hard brain work behind all those titles for a 14-year-old,” Cindy said. She believes it is very important to keep performance senior dogs active if they are in good health. “They can become depressed just like humans. After competing for years and then one day not doing what they love any more is heart-breaking for them.

“Now 14, JesseBelle is at her happiest and still wants to learn and participate. A wonderful new thing in Rally is AKC’s new titling class, Rally Choice, which has no jumps. Perfect for my senior dog,” Cindy said.

JesseBelle received her RACH on March 5, 2023, at the SOJAC club in South Hampton, NJ.

RACH Boone Of The Big House CDX BN RM3 RAE2 RATCH CGC TKE owned by Sandra M. Muench of Plant City, FL

Now almost 8 years old, Boone, an Australian Cattle Dog mix, was found wandering in Georgia. He was taken to a Florida rescue group to foster for adoption. After seeing his online photo and bio, Sandra knew Boone was destined to become part of her family. “Boone has boundless energy and loves to do everything – as long as there is a treat in there somewhere!” she said.

Following puppy and basic obedience classes at DogSense Obedience, they started Rally and worked their way up to the more advanced classes. “I enjoy the teamwork aspect of Rally,” Sandra said. “After earning our Rally Master title, I decided we would continue competing towards a RACH.

“Boone is the class clown and is easily distracted by applause in another ring thinking, of course, that it is for him. However, with experience in the ring he became focused to the point we earned three High in Trials and four High Combined in one weekend.” Boone earned his RACH on March 18, 2023, at the Tampa Bay Dog Training Club.

RACH Surdakowski’s Luke RM3 RAE3 owned by Beth Surdakowski of Fayetteville, NC

Luke was born under a deck in Sumter S.C., and was rescued by Carolina Helping Paws, along with his mother and siblings. “I adopted him at 12 weeks of age; he was an adorable ball of fluff,” Beth said. “As he grew older he was afraid of people and new situations, so we began training in rally and agility to have fun and to build confidence,” Beth said.

“At our first rally show I thought I’d never get him past the man at the gate taking leashes. Now Luke cannot wait to go to shows and new places. A hobby turned into a passion for both of us,” Beth said. “Luke has come a long way, he received his RACH at Cape Fear Dog Training Club on April 8, 2023, coincidentally, the same place he almost didn’t make it into the ring at our first show.”

RACH Masked Rider RM2 RAE2 OA AXJ NF CGCU TKI owned by Kristine & Keith Mills of Haslet, TX

“I am so proud of Rider and his accomplishments. When we started taking Rally classes, he did so well but I never imagined that we would be able to compete as he is anxious around strangers,” Kristine said. “I didn’t think he would ever feel comfortable in a trial setting with all the people and dogs and having a judge follow him around in a ring, but he managed to pull it off. During his time working toward his RACH, he even earned three High Combined and three High Triple awards.

“Rider also participates in Agility, and he recently started scent work and seems to be enjoying that as well. He loves to swim, play ball, and go camping.” He earned his RACH at the Lone Star Dog Obedience Club trial on April 22, 2023, in Bonham, Texas.

RACH Le Grand Coeur Cosmo RM3 RAE2 MX MXB MXJ MXP MXF MFP SWA SCE CGC TKA FITG owned by Tracy Gruis of Arlington, VA

“Cosmo is 7 ½ years old, 74 pounds, with a distinctive white left front paw. Each foot has dew claws,” Tracy said. “He has long legs, a long tail and body, and a huge heart, ergo his name: ‘Cosmo the Big-Hearted.’ “

Tracy adopted him from Wolf Trap Animal Rescue (WTAR) in February 2016.

“I got him on a Saturday; he was ready to learn by Sunday,” Tracy said. “Cosmo has always been ready to learn if food is involved: sit, shake, wobble board, etc. He is a good-natured sweetie who counter and kitchen sink surfs (if given the opportunity). He snuggles up to those he loves and charms them with his pretty brown eyes. Cosmo has received his Canine Good Citizen, Trick Dog Advanced, & Fit Dog Gold titles. He has trained for, and competed and received titles in, Agility, Scentwork (his favorite activity) and Rally.”

After one Rally class taken around 2019, Tracy practiced with Cosmo at home, on their morning walks and in her yard in the afternoon. “We worked very hard learning on our own and at trials, and I learned how to bring out the best of his Rally abilities. He was my first dog to get a perfect 100 in Rally Masters. Wow! I’m so proud of him. Cosmo achieved his RACH on June 2, 2023, in Winchester, VA, at the Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club of Maryland trial.”

SCENT WORK

Congratulations to these dogs for earning the Scent Work Detective (SWD) title:

MACH2 He Shoots, He Scores RN MXB2 MJB2 MFB T2B SWD SWM owned by Teresa Rodney of Fountain Valley, CA

“Score is an extremely high drive dog and is well known for the rivers of spit and drool he leaves flying behind him,” Teresa said. “His main loves are agility and scent work. He is aptly named as he absolutely loves watching sports on TV, especially hockey when the announcer yells out his name, ‘SCOOOOORE!’ At home, he is a very sweet, loving dog who loves to cuddle. He has a superb temperament and amazing work ethic.”

He earned the SWD title at the Scent Work Club of the San Gabriel Foothills trial held in Altadena, CA on March 12, 2023.

A-Tx Here For A Good Time BCAT SWD SWM CGC TKI owned by Olivia Vescovo of Austin, TX

Russel is a 9-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Kelpie mix that Olivia began fostering in 2019. After about six months of no adoption interest, she decided to sign him up for a scent work class taught by AKC judge Kathryn Butts. Russel excelled, and after about four months of training and lots of encouragement from Kathryn, Olivia and Russel entered their first competition.

“Of course, I told myself that all this training was just to prove he could be a sport dog to generate interest for his adoption,” Olivia said. “Well, he received qualifying scores in every element he was entered in, even snagging some placements! That was that. I was hooked and I decided Russel was staying with me forever.

“We dabbled in some other sports, like agility, but since he was older when I got him, I decided to stick with scent work as our main focus. He was my very first scent work dog, and together we have learned all the ins and outs of training and trialing and developing a true partnership. Russel has patiently worked through all my training mistakes and is always up for new training challenges. Working with Russel made me fall in love with scent work, so much so that I started teaching classes and am now a AKC Provisional Scent Work judge! Scent work has opened up a fun, welcoming community of dog enthusiasts for us and I am so glad to be a part of it.”

Russel earned the Scent Work Detective title on March 26, 2023, in Austin, TX.

Czar Nickolas “Niko” Fox Lawson FDC FCAT5 SWD SWME SHDN CGCA CGCU TKI FITG owned by Raena Latina & Joseph Lawson of Indianapolis, IN

“Niko’s Detective journey took 23 tries with 10 judges. We had several ‘just missed by one’ and a few ‘one and dones,’ but eventually qualified under six different judges and got the magical #10 on April 2, 2023, at the Greater Chicago Area Scentwork Association in Lockport, IL,” Raena said.

“In late June of this year, Niko had surgery for a meningioma tumor in his spinal cord. He turned 10½ on July 1 and finished his 20th round of radiation on Aug 11. The trauma of the surgery rendered both of his back legs paralyzed, but though he has significant muscle atrophy, he has made progress in walking again. He is currently doing physical therapy twice a week. This experience has driven home the phrases ‘enjoy every day’ and ‘live life to its fullest.’

“Since his first scent class in fall 2020 and his first trial in March 2021, Scent Work trials have taken us around our home state of Indiana and to Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Niko now has 40 AKC SW titles – and we are just one Masters Interior Q away from Masters Elite 2!” Raena said. “So, as we continue his rehab, we are eagerly looking forward to getting back to classes and trialing again in September!”

Shenanigator NAJ NF SWD SWM SHDE owned by Victoria Lovejoy of West Richland, WA

“Shenanigator is 7 years old and an accomplished sniffer, agility dog, dock diver and all-around companion!” Victoria said. “She has titles in many different agility venues and multiple championships in scent work. Recently we’ve been working on her Master HD title. She also retrieves antlers in shed hunting and finds rats in Barn Hunt competitions. She is eager to please but mostly wants to work and have fun!” Her SWD was earned in Cashmere, WA, at the Wenatchee Kennel Club Scent Work trial on May 20, 2023.

Schwarz’s Jackson Slim CD BN RM FCAT SWM SCME SIME TKN owned by Patricia M Schwarz of Floresville, TX

Before joining the Schwarz household, Slim was adopted from a shelter at the age of 6 months. But just a few months later he was picked up, malnourished and dodging traffic on a busy interstate highway by a friend of Patricia. His microchip led to an owner who did not want him back and happily relinquished ownership. Patricia saw potential in this rowdy puppy who appeared to have had no guidance or training. So, at approximately 10 months of age, he found his forever home with the Schwarz Pack.

“Slim loved attention and training. He proved to be intelligent, affectionate, eager to please, and easy to train. What more could a handler ask for? When other family dogs posed with trial ribbons, he would photo bomb the pictures to sit next to the pretty ribbons. His first mail from AKC was his Canine Partners program certificate and he posed proudly next to it. Over the next four years there have been many pretty ribbons of his own to pose with and lots of mail from AKC,” Patricia said.

Slim earned his SWM at a trial in Creedmoor, Texas, on March 26, 2023. He qualified in all four Master Element searches to finish his SBM, earn his SWM, and win High in Trial. He also qualified in his Detective search with a first-place finish. “It was truly a magical day, and he is shown posing with his ribbons in the attached photo.”

Hershey Harbor Seal CA DCAT SWM SCNE SHDA CGCA CGCU TKA ATT VHMA VSWB owned by Rebecca Burnham of Austin, TX

“When I had the brilliant idea to get a second dog I never expected I’d fall in love with such a spunky little thing. Rayna was found wandering the streets of San Antonio, TX. She quickly wormed her way into my heart with her smile (and a bit of smothering),” Rebecca said. “Humans are her favorite thing in the whole world, followed closely by food and going on critter patrol in the yard. Her ‘heck yeah I’m down, let’s do it’ attitude has spurred my love for all things training, and she has shown a natural talent in scent work that has helped us excel in the sport quickly. When we’re not off on a trial weekend, she spends her time causing trouble with my Boxer, Khaos, cuddling with my cat, Yzma, or hanging out in the yard and going on adventures. She is truly the most amazing little dog I’ve ever met and if dog soul mates exist she would be mine.”

Rayna earned her SWM on March 26, 2023, at the Scent Work Austin Texas Club Trial in Creedmoor, TX.

Kate’s Little Wagamuffin CDX PCD BN GN GO RN SWM CGC TKN FITB owned by Kate Cowles & Brendan Holly of Coralville, IA

Kate and Brendan adopted Donny from their local animal shelter. “According to a DNA test,” Kate said, “he is mostly Miniature Schnauzer, Beagle, and Chihuahua. He is a versatile performance dog, having earned AKC titles in obedience, rally, Scent Work, tricks, and Fit Dog.”

“More importantly, Donny is a wonderful companion to my husband and me and an excellent ambassador for dogs. He loves kids and seniors and is gently affectionate when he meets them. He was always beside me when I taught by Zoom during the height of the pandemic, and my students often commented that they liked to see him.”

Donny earned his AKC Scent Work Master title on April 2, 2023, at the Iowa City Dog Obedience Club trial.

Sir Isaac Newton Bc RE AJP OFP SWM SIEE SHDN CGC owned by Karen & Jim Allen of Spokane Valley, WA

“What an exciting journey Newton and I are on,” Karen said. “Newton is a 6-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. He is sweet, loving, enjoys visiting with his people friends before we search, making new friends at trials, and is a methodical searcher. A giving pup with a smile.”

“A judge once told me I needed to stay out of the picture. She noticed that Newton is so sensitive and by only gently guiding with my leash, he then defaults back to ‘I will follow where you lead me instead of following my nose.’ We have grown so much as a team, and we just love this sport! With every trial and practice (at class or those I set) I have learned to just step back and watch, observe his movements. He just amazes me how he works the odor.”

“Newton is methodical in his searching (yes, we do time out frequently), but it is beautiful to see the odor flowing with his gentle movements as he glides through the search areas. Some may ask why I do not call the hides earlier but how do you deny him the freedom of working, to solve the puzzle, to follow the scent and FREEZE.”

He finished his Scent Work Master title on April 23, 2023, at the Puget Sound Doberman Pinscher Club scent work trial in Rainer, WA. “To top it off he was Master High in Trial qualifying in the elements offered Buried, Container, and Interior. It was such an exciting moment!” Karen said.

“We are currently competing in Detective and on Elite titles. Newton is a great traveler and now that I am judging he is there too, waiting patiently to do whatever I ask of him. When we are not at scent work trials, we are off hiking or playing ball in the backyard! Tracking is next on our list of sports. Enjoy the sniffing journey and remember to let your pup take the lead.”

Nutting Lake Super Sampson SWM owned by Liz Lynch of Worcester, MA

Sampson was adopted by Liz from a rescue after eating a pair of socks and needing surgery to remove them. He was 18 months old and full of energy. After she adopted him, she realized he was reactive to other dogs and nervous in new places. They started working on his behavior and added Scent Work. “He was very food motivated and he enjoyed training,” Liz said. “Over time, this sport helped him overcome a lot of his nervousness, and along with the behavioral work, we built trust and were able to be successful in trials. I always advocate for him and ask for space if we need it. Now he is a searching machine!”

“Seeing the positive results Sampson achieved with Scent Work inspired me to become a Scent Work judge and help other teams find the same success. I love being part of the journey for so many teams. Our journey has been a little slower than others due to his sensitivities, but each team’s journey is different and that’s what I love about the sport,” Liz said. Sampson earned his SWM title on April 30, 2023, in Liverpool NY at the Syracuse Obedience Training Club’s trial. Their goal is to earn the Detective title in the future.

Just Jesse TD SWM TKI owned by Elizabeth Patton of Lawrence, KS

Jesse was rescued by an animal shelter near Lawrence. “I was a volunteer at that shelter and observed how sweet and beautiful he was,” Elizabeth said. “Having just lost a wonderful dog to cancer, I decided to adopt Jesse to mend my broken heart.”

From the beginning, Jesse was food oriented and enjoyed using his nose, and Elizabeth predicted a future as a therapy and tracking dog. “A tracking friend who did scent work gave us lessons, and Jesse loved it. With additional excellent instruction, Jesse made steady progress up the levels, even though we compete only four times a year,” Elizabeth said. “Containers were easy for him; exteriors were a blast. But buried was a little trickier, I think because of the way the scent disperses.”

“Once we got to Masters, we found the challenges much harder. The pressure was more on me than on Jesse, because I had to keep track of numbers of hides as well as time. I get very nervous, so keeping focused and remembering to breathe are always my goals. Jesse works steadily and meticulously. He is not easily flustered and handles most distractions well. He did, however, fall for nachos on two occasions at the same trial!” she said.

“Detective is yet another step up in difficulty, but it is a ridiculous amount of fun. We have two legs and will keep going as long as we are having a good time. In the meantime, Jesse has become a registered therapy dog with Pet Partners, and he is working on his Tracking Dog Excellent title.”

Jesse finished his Scent Work Masters title May 13, 2023 in Blue Springs, MO at a trial by The Greater Kansas City Dog Training Club.

Watson’s Gypsy SWM owned by Freda Ann Watson of Nordland, WA

Gypsy’s story began as a rescue in Texas. The senior parents of one of Freda’s friends adopted her as a puppy in 2011.

“She was a 1-year-old pup without a job and was chewing her way through their house. I started looking for outlets for her energy and started her in Agility. She loved the freedom of running and all the obstacles (and associated treats),” Freda said.

When Freda moved to Washington in 2018 her sister convinced her to try Scent Work. She had been working with her dog for a short while at The Lucky Dog Training Center in Chimacum, Washington. They seemed to really enjoy it, so Freda enrolled. “Gypsy, being totally food motivated, took to it immediately,” Freda said. “What could be better than being rewarded for what she did naturally – sniffing? My sister started competing in the Scent Work Trials in 2019 and I would go with her to help out and keep her and the dogs company. It was a while before I ‘drank the koolade’ and started competing myself.”

Their first trial was in April 2021 and on May 9, 2021, Freda and Gypsy had their Novice title. “Needless to say, we were hooked. We finished our Master title on May 26, 2023, at the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club show in Sequim, WA, and are working on our Detective title (only 7 more to go)!”

“It’s great to spend one-on-one time with your dog as a partner on an activity that you both love. You meet some amazing people and see some amazing places in Scent Work. I can’t think of any other sport where you rely on what your dog is telling you. As we say in class ‘Trust Your Dog.’”

Congratulations to this dog on earning the TD title:

Fluffy Doofus Face RN TD CGC owned by Karri Klawiter of Dewitt, MI

Kimber, a 4-year-old Great Pyrenees/Bernese Mountain Dog mix, is “high in independence, low on the biddability scale, some may even say stubborn, but I prefer to think of her as selectively motivated – working has to be worth it to her,” Karri said.

“She’s actually the reason I got into dog sports. When she was young, I signed her up for a basic obedience class that ended with her CGC, but I felt bad leaving our older dog home and signed him up for a ‘fun class.’ That class led to the next class, and the next, and so on.
“Kimber has always had an excellent nose, so when I saw my first tracking event last year, I knew we had to give it a try. Now we are training towards her TDX. Kimber also does Rally and Scent Work with some Agility here and there for fun.”

“When I enrolled her in the AKC Canine Partners program after she earned her CGC, I thought ‘Fluffy Doofus Face’ would be funny… I didn’t expect to get into dog sports. But now everyone gets a chuckle whenever she is entered in an event.”

She earned her TD on April 30, 2023, at the Kalamazoo Kennel Club’s test.

Trick Dog – Trick Dog Elite Performer (TKE)

Testing of this truly elite trick dog level requires the dog to perform 10 tricks with at least five props and there must be a story. Congratulations to these All American Dogs who have earned the TKE:

Kandi Olga Sawyer NA NAJ ACT1 ACT1J TKE owned by Jo Ann L. Sawyer of Palm Harbor, FL

“Kandi Olga Sawyer loves everyone. She is a bundle of joy and energy and enjoys agility, doing tricks with her friends at Upper Suncoast Dog Training Club in Clearwater, FL, and visiting children with the Project Pup Organization,” Jo Ann said.

“Tricks are a great way to bond with your dog and I am so thankful for her instructors in helping Kandi earn the TKE on March 28, 2023. She put on a complete story by Bryan Carrier about a Canine Private Investigator solving a case. We loved every minute of the training and performance. Kandi has a big heart and brings smiles when visiting libraries, schools, and hospitals.

“Her stage name is ‘Kooky Queen Kandi,’ and she loves to perform with the Pawsitively Amazing Tricksters. I have had dogs all my life, but Kandi and her brother Kai are the first dogs that I trained and competed for AKC titles in agility and tricks with. What a difference it makes! It definitely is a rewarding experience, and the dogs bring so much joy to the community.”

California’s Little Orphan Annie NA OAJ OF THDN CGCA TKE owned by Deborah Hoeflich of Morro Bay, CA

Annie was rescued by a humane society, and a rescue organization posted a picture of the then 4-month-old puppy. Deborah responded. She had not planned on three dogs, but Annie became the third dog in the family, joining a Chihuahua-mix and a Labrador. “She just touched our hearts,” Deborah said.

“We learned that Annie has lots of energy and is very smart. We got her into agility training, and she learned the obstacles and the game quickly. She competes in the top level of AKC Agility and is working on her agility championship,” Deborah said.

“While getting Annie ready for therapy dog work, COVID was hitting. We could not visit anywhere. Our training facility, Canine Academy, had a new tricks class called Trixie’s Tricks. Annie quickly earned her Novice Trick Dog and CGC titles. I never dreamed that we would keep going,” Deborah said. “Annie loved her Advanced Trick Dog class, so we kept learning new tricks and she earned her Intermediate Trick Dog Title in November 2020. She earned her CGCA in May 2021. We started as a therapy dog team in July 2021 and were allowed to visit our hospital workers.”

Annie loves skateboarding, hiding in a suitcase, and riding in a wagon. She learned to play the piano, push a cart, and bring her toys for packing. She was always entertaining and encouraging to our fellow classmates.

In September 2021 Annie earned her Trick Dog Advanced Title and in May 2022, the Performer Trick Dog. “We worked hard on our final routine for her Trick Dog Elite Performer title. She earned this on April 4th, 2023, with her daddy reading the script for us. In it, Annie is a wonderful talented dog. She was rescued when a little girl told her teacher about a puppy in the neighborhood that was crying. This small act saved our Amazing Annie.”

Toni Bennett FDC BCAT CGC TKE FITB owned by Beth Jarrell of Sanibel, FL

Toni is a 1 ½ year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi mix. “She is small, but that sure doesn’t slow her down!” Beth said. “We belong to the Dog Obedience Club of Lee County, where Toni started off at only 4 months old, earning her STAR Puppy and CGC titles, as well as her Farm Dog Certification. She is on the hunt for her Beginner Novice title in obedience and will begin trailing soon.

“After the devastating Hurricane Ian, which hit our home in September of last year, Toni sparked joy in our community by providing comfort to those who had lost their homes. She loves people and has been known to stop in her tracks when she sees someone who she thinks needs a little doggy love. She is working on her therapy dog certification, and we hope to become a READ dog team. Silly and goofy in spirit, she elicits giggles and laughs, and lights up when she makes you smile.

“Toni enjoys being a trick dog and frequently performs several trick dog routines for children at our public library. She earned her Elite Performer title on April 4, 2022, at our home in front of an audience of friends. She doesn’t plan to stop learning tricks any time soon, having added several to her repertoire, and plans to enter the AKC’s Trick Dog National Competition this fall,” Beth said.

Resa TKE owned by Grace Chapman of New Castle, PA

Resa was born on February 18, 2018, and joined Grace’s family as an 8-week-old puppy. “She was supposed to be a family dog, but after I took over her training, she picked me to be her person,” Grace said. “It wasn’t until Resa was about 2 that I moved beyond obedience training and started to teach her tricks. She picked these up quickly, so I researched more and more tricks to teach her!

“She is an incredibly smart dog who can learn most tricks within a couple of training sessions. When Resa was 4, I discovered the AKC Trick Dog Program and together we earned the novice, intermediate, advanced, and performer titles. Then, this summer, Resa earned her Elite Performer title!”

Also this summer, Resa participated in a disc dog league. “Her favorite things to do are play disc, learn new tricks, jump hurdles, and follow me around the house. She does not like to ride in the car, but once we get to our destination she loves to explore and enjoys trips with my family all around the country.”

Resa is the star of the YouTube channel Resa’s Trick Academy. You can follow all of Resa’s adventures and see what she is up to on her personal Instagram page @resas_trick_academy or on her YouTube channel. She earned the AKC Trick Dog Elite Performer title on June 3, 2023, at Petsmart in New Castle, PA.
