The AKC works with several non-AKC service and sports organizations to recognize the titles that AKC-registered dogs earn in their programs. This includes the AKC Therapy Dog titling program and the AKC Search & Rescue title program. AKC also recognizes titles of the Barn Hunt Association (BHA); North American Diving Dogs (NADD); the North American Flyball Association (NAFA); and now UpDog Challenge disc organization. AKC Therapy Dog Title
The AKC Therapy Dog Title program offers titles based on the amount of service that a therapy team has volunteered, giving more dogs the opportunity to earn the honor. Dogs also must be certified by an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization.
The titles are:
- AKC Therapy Dog Novice (THDN). Must have completed 10 visits.
- AKC Therapy Dog (THD). Must have completed 50 visits.
- AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (THDA). Must have completed 100 visits.
- AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (THDX). Must have completed 200 visits.
- AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished (THDD). Must have completed 400 visits.

Hoot N. Holler THDD CGC owned by Gayle Bragg of Columbia, MD
“Hoot is a generous, furry, 64-pound empath who never runs out of patience, comforting touches or desire to do anything to make people happy – from wearing costumes to having his picture taken,” Gayle said. Hoot is a member of three service organizations:
- The American Red Cross as a happy face at blood drives, Red Cross Headquarters, the ARC stock photo library, and as part of the Walter Reed Animal Visitation Team where he loves to give people “Hoot hugs” and take holiday pictures with veterans, their families and staff.
- Paws For Comfort has the mission of providing loving support to those in challenging situations. Hoot regularly visits Prisms, a program to serve adults with dementia, and Cedar Lane, a school for special need students. He also enjoyed visits to nursing homes and being in a program that introduced families to dogs for the first time.
- Fidos For Freedom, a service/therapy dog organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for people by providing assistance/service and therapy dogs and to educate the public about individuals with disabilities. Hoot loves to visit schools during exam time, the Ronald McDonald House, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Kennedy Krieger Institute, and the Maryland Renaissance Festival. Hoot was certified as a therapy dog when he was 1 year old and continues to be an active member of the organization through Zoom meetings and outdoor/socially distanced/masked training and off-site visits.
When he is not working, Hoot loves to fetch the paper, play with his big blue ball, cuddle with family, go to the beach, and ride in the car with the windows down.
On Oct. 18, 2020, Hoot received his Distinguished Therapy Dog title. He also has his Fidos DEAR Certification (Dogs Educating and Assisting Reading) and AKC CGC.

UpDog Challenge Disc
Disc Dog is an exciting, fast-paced sport that all dogs and people can enjoy. UpDog has taken the basic game of fetch with a flying disc and expanded it into 10 fun games. Dogs of any breed, type, size or shape can play and be successful. If your dog can fetch, your dog can play UpDog. Dogs get points in every game and cumulative points earn UpDog Achievements (called “UPs”). Once you have earned an UP in at least three games, you can apply for the AKC Disc Dog titles.
