New York, NY — Dr. Joseph H. Kinnarney has been named the first American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) liaison to the American Kennel Club® (AKC®), a position newly created to foster shared objectives between the two organizations. As AVMA liaison, Dr. Kinnarney will work with AKC liaison Mari-Beth O’Neill to ensure access to world-class health information for owners, breeders, and scientists, to educate new dog owners on preventative health and to support funding canine health research.
“We look forward to working with Dr. Kinnarney as AVMA’s liaison to AKC,” said Mari-Beth O’Neill, Assistant Vice President of Sport Services. “The AKC and AVMA are both relentlessly committed to advancing canine health and improving the care and well-being of all dogs and this shared mission will allow us to accomplish a great deal for dogs.”
“The health checks and research that dog breeders do before planning their litters helps improve the health of all dogs, something I know firsthand as a veterinarian as well as a breeder and dog fancier,” said Dr. Kinnarney. “I am excited to work with the AKC and see what we can accomplish with over 275 years of collective animal knowledge between the two organizations.”
Dr. Kinnarney graduated from Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980 and currently practices small animal medicine at Reidsville Veterinary Hospital in Reidsville, North Carolina. He has a particular interest in small animal surgery and complex orthopedic cases, and also uses his MS in Reproductive Physiology to assist many hobby breeders with their breeding programs.
He also has personal ties to the dog show world. In 1995, his black Scottie, Champion Gaelforce PostScript, was crowned Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. He continues to breed Scottish Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers under the Jovial kennel name.
Dr. Kinnarney’s professional awards include the 2006 Distinguished Veterinarian Award from the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (NCVMA) and 1991 Veterinarian of the Year, also from NCVMA. His previous work with the AVMA includes service on the Board of Directors from 2007-2013 and the position of AVMA Vice President and Student Liaison from 1999-2001. As AVMA liaison, Dr. Kinnarney will serve a once-renewable, three-year term ending in August 2016.
