The American Kennel Club (AKC®) is excited to announce that AKC Family Dog Magazine won Folio’s 2020 Eddie award for Best Animals/ Pets Consumer Magazine, Full Issue, for its “Youth Issue” (May/June 2020). The 2020 Folio: Eddie and Ozzie Award announced 300 winners out of thousands of entries this week.

The Folio awards have been around for over 25 years and recognize “engaging content and gorgeous design” across all sectors of the publishing industry.

This is the first time AKC Family Dog has been honored with an award by Folio.

AKC Family Dog’s “Youth Issue” garnered praise for its focus on junior handlers of all ages getting started in the world of dog sports. “We carefully select our issues based on our love of the dog and human bond, and we couldn’t think of a better way than to show that through the lens of junior handlers and their dogs,” said AKC Family Dog Managing Editor, Mara Bovsun.

The issue navigates as youths learn about the discipline and skill that comes with dog sports, as well as learning about being responsible dog owners.

This year’s 2020 Folio: Eddie and Ozzie Awards also praised the article, “Momma Mia and her Bald Ballerina” by Managing Editor, Mara Bovsun in the March/April 2020 issue, the “Comfort Issue.”

The article, “Momma Mia and her Bald Ballerina” captivated readers with the story of a young ballerina, Maggie Kudirka, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 23. Despite her health battle, she was able to overcome the emotional hardship with the help of her Pomeranian show dog, Momma Mia.

“I’m thrilled that Family Dog has gained recognition as the leading pets consumer magazine and hope that we continue to stand out from the rest of the crowd with our story-telling and appeal to a new generation of dog-lovers,” said Bovsun of the magazine’s win.
