On the evening of July 27, 2004 the Raleigh Police Department lost one of their beloved K-9 dogs. Nero, a four year old Belgian Malinois, was tragically killed in a training accident. Nero’s death has taken a toll on the department. This is the second dog the department has lost in the last three months.
The AKC Community Events Team recognized the Raleigh Police Department’s need and acted quickly to support them. As a result, on August 5th, John Lyons made a presentation to the Raleigh Police Department on behalf of all the AKC employees. In his presentation John acknowledged the AKC’s support of Law Enforcement Agencies and the K-9 dogs that help them protect lives and property. He presented Officer Adams (Nero’s human partner) with a DOGNY statue honoring Nero. He also presented the Chief of Police, Jane Perlov, with a check for $1,000 for the purchase of a new dog. John went on to announce that the AKC Companion Animal Recovery (CAR) will donate $10 to the department for every dog that gets microchipped at the AKC’s Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Millbrook Park on Saturday, September 18th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Chief Perlov came to the microphone next. She expressed the department’s sincere gratitude for the AKC’s contribution. She said the AKC came through again, just like they always do in time of need. Chief Perlov is a dog lover and emphasized the important role that dogs play in the department.
Next Captain Ken Mathias stepped up to the microphone. Capt. Mathias is the person responsible for getting the department’s K-9 Unit established. He praised everyone involved with the K-9 Unit for their hard work and dedication.
The generosity of the AKC employees has made a real difference in the community.
