It’s a question many people ask when they are brining home a new puppy or grown dog. With the exception of those who have firmly set their sights on the conformation show ring and breeding the next generation of champions, the benefits of registration may not be obvious. But the benefits are there, even for owners of dogs, including mixed breeds, who will never be part of the conformation dog-show world.

When you bring your puppy home, you may want nothing more than a wonderful companion, and that’s fine. But, face it, one of the great joys of owning a dog is bragging rights. You don’t need the weight of a 130+-year-old organization to prove that you have the best dog on earth. But a title from the acknowledged authority on all things canine can’t hurt. To earn an AKC title, even Canine Good Citizen, your dog needs to be registered with the organization. Even if the idea of title has never crossed your mind, don’t rule it out. Your new puppy or dog is a blank slate, like a child. It’s your responsibility to help him reach his full potential. Aiming for a title will help you do that.

Eligibility to Participate in Sports

Registration opens the world of AKC dog sports, from the wildly popular agility to lesser-known pursuits like lure coursing. Also, rememberthat your life, and your aspirations, may change.
