AKC Government Relations is delighted to announce that Barbara Reichman of the NAIA Trust of New Jersey has become the first two-time winner of the Walter Bebout Memorial Award for Leadership in Canine Legislation by the American Kennel Club.
Mrs. Reichman was first awarded with a Bebout Award in 2014, in recognition of her work on behalf of the New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs. Since then, she proved instrumental in efforts to address recent harmful legislation in New Jersey that sought to limit the retail sale of pets. Favorable amendments to the legislation, as well as securing a governor’s conditional veto, were due in no small part to her dedication to the cause, attention to detail, in-depth policy knowledge, and advocacy efforts.
In addition to her work for the NAIA Trust of New Jersey, Barb serves as the Shelter Project Director for the National Animal Interest Alliance; as Legislative Liaison for the Golden Retriever Club of America, the Garden State Golden Retriever Club, and Schooley’s Mountain Kennel Club; and serves as a Delegate to the New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs.
“Since I started working with Barb in 2007, her dedication to promoting the causes of animal welfare and public health while working to defend the rights of breeders and owners is unparalleled”, said Phil Guidry, Government Relations’ Director of Policy Analysis. “With a focus on the substance that can be added to the policy process, her successful style of advocacy has not only proven itself effective, but also has served as an important resource for lawmakers and legislative staff in New Jersey. Our dog world would be greatly served if we could clone Barb Reichman. I am honored that Barb is both my trusted colleague and a dear friend.”
Named for the late Director of the AKC Government Relations Department, the “Bebout Award” recognizes federations, dog owner/breeder organizations, and individuals that have been actively involved in educating legislators about responsible dog ownership issues and that have worked to preserve the rights of responsible owners and breeders. Organizations honored with the Bebout Award receive a $1,000 donation to help offset the costs associated with their legislative efforts.
Mrs. Reichman will be presented with her 2017 Bebout Award at an upcoming event.
