Gaia is in her Halloween costume, posing with this trick-or-treat loot, but her owner, Bibi McCormick of Cary, NC, does not plan for her to eat any as chocolate and many ingredients found in candy are not good for dogs. Gaia is a 2-year-old mixed breed who is a member of the AKC Canine Partners program.

Make sure you are careful where you place your Halloween treats – and that your children are also careful about keeping their goodies out of the reach of the family dogs.

But that does not mean your dog can’t enjoy a Halloween treat. Bake your dog some healthy cookies following this simple recipe.  Cut out in shapes of ghosts and pumpkins and decorate with yogurt icing as desired. You might even bag some up to give out to neighbor dogs who accompany their families on trick or treat stops.

Ingredients:

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter

1 cup skim milk

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. Stir together the flour and baking powder; set aside.
In a medium bowl, mix together the peanut butter and milk. Stir in the flour mixture until well blended. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into shapes using cookie cutters. Place 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets.
Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly brown. Remove from cookie sheets to cool on wire racks.
