Rare breeds not yet recognized by AKC can be eligible to enroll in AKC Canine Partners and compete in AKC events. That is the case with Seraphina (formally known as Song Dog Bright Angel UD GO) who is an American Indian Dog. Fena came to live with us as an 8 week old puppy. She was high energy and smart and definitely needed a job so she began training in agility, rally, and obedience as a very young dog.
She originally competed in events sponsored by non-AKC venues as she was not eligible for AKC events at the time
When AKC started the Canine Partners Program, she began competing in AKC events as well. She is listed as an All-American Dog by AKC. But I think the title “All American” is fitting because the American Indian Dog is descended from a breed that has its origins in this country.
At the age of 11, she still has the bounce and drive of a puppy. Her sense of humor and love of competition make her a joy to work with. I don’t think she will ever retire!
Fena received the UD title on Nov. 9, 2015, at the Southern Colorado Kennel Club show in Pueblo, Colorado. We are now pursuing the Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) title!
