Since first detected on June 3, 2026, 46 cases of New World Screwworm (NWS, or screwworm) have been detected in southwest Texas and New Mexico.  While the number of screwworm cases have remained low, the American Kennel Club continues to recommend that all dog owners, or anyone who works with dogs, to learn about screwworm and stay updated on animal movement requirements imposed to prevent its spread, particularly:

  • Anyone who may engage in interstate transportation with dogs, including owners, AKC event competitors, professional handlers, event superintendents, and interstate transporters, including those that are part of shelter and rescue operations should pay attention to NWS-related animal movement rules.  See links to state NWS rules, below.   imposed by (1) their home state; (2) all states they will travel though, both outbound and return; and (3) their destination state.
  • Show and trial secretaries, who are encouraged to determine the impact of NWS-related animal movement restrictions, particularly for events to be held in any state with an Infested Zone.

State Animal Movement Rules

Most states have created their own NWS-related rules, requirements, and movement restrictions for animals, which are in addition to their regular animal interstate importation requirements. Regular animal importation requirements apply in those states that have not implemented NWS-specific rules.

Those who will engage in interstate transportation with dogs should review the NWS-related rules imposed by (1) their home state; (2) all states they will travel through, both outbound and return; and (3) their destination state.  Click a state name to be redirected to its latest rules and information.
