We were delighted to learn that cumulative ratings indicated more people watched the last AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on Animal Planet and Discovery Channel than any other televised dog show. Therefore our televised event is one of the most important vehicles we have to positively showcase AKC programs and the sport. One group that deserves special attention is the purebred dog breeder.
Last year we highlighted and recognized outstanding breeders and their achievements with the introduction of the annual AKC Breeder of The Year Award sponsored by Bayer. The award will again be presented during group judging at the 2003 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship on December 3rd in Long Beach, CA. Seven nominees, one from each variety group, will be selected. The nominees, who will be announced in November, must have made a significant contribution to the world of purebred dogs through their dedication to a specific breed for more than 20 years. This year we will be honored to have last year’s winner—Poodle breeder Wendell Sammett—as a member of the nominating committee. I am sure the committee will select seven esteemed breeders who will make us all proud to have them represent the best of the purebred dog breeder.
As you hopefully have heard by now, in further recognition of the unique contribution of the purebred dog breeder, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Event Committee has added a new level of competition with significant cash prizes for Bred-By Exhibitor entries: Bred-By-Exhibitor Group classes and Best Bred-By-Exhibitor in Show. Portions of this new Bred-by-Exhibitor event will be taped. It is our intention that highlights of the competition will be broadcast on Animal Planet along with the 2003 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.
The AKC/Eukanuba National Championship provides a wonderful opportunity for our breeders to showcase their accomplishments. They are exemplary role models for the public who may be interested in becoming involved in some aspect of AKC events, or for those who are simply looking to find a healthy, happy puppy to add to their family. The event creates an opportunity for the public to see these wonderful dogs and to learn about the dedication, commitment, and hard work that goes into producing these outstanding specimens.
Our show is an opportunity on the largest scale to introduce the purebred pet owner to the American Kennel Club, its programs and services, and the devoted members of the fancy that comprise AKC’s core constituency. We look forward to honoring the dedicated breeder-owner-handler once again this year.
Sincerely,
Ron Menaker
