A Wisconsin bill that will make it more difficult for owners to reclaim their pets continues to advance. Those who reside or participate in dog events in Wisconsin are strongly encouraged to contact the Assembly and express your concerns with AB 487 as currently written. Visit AKC’s Legislative Action Center and type your address in the “Find Your Elected Officials” box to get the name and contact information for your State Representative. A full contact list for the Assembly may be found here.
Among other provisions, AB 487 would shorten the time in which an owner may reclaim a lost dog at a shelter. It would also require those accused (but not convicted) of violations of the state’s animal laws to continue to make payments for the care of their animals during an ongoing trial or risk losing ownership of the dog forever – even if they are ultimately found not guilty or charges are dropped.
Read AKC’s previous alert for more information and talking points on this bill.
AKC Government Relations will continue to closely monitor this legislation. For questions or more information, contact the Dog Federation of Wisconsin at doglaw@dfow.net or AKC Government Relations at doglaw@akc.org.
