On Thursday, April 14, the Fauquier County (VA) Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing and consider adopting clarifying amendments to zoning regulations governing small, non-commercial kennels in the county.

Under the current zoning ordinance, a zoning permit is required for any breeding activity. County code further requires a dealer license for breeders who produce more than one litter.  These requirements have been creating confusion, as the county code exempts those who breed one companion animal no more than one time per calendar year.

At a recent Planning Commission hearing, amendments were advanced that seek to clarify the zoning regulations governing small, non-commercial kennels in the county.  Additionally, the text amendments would streamline the process for obtaining the current permits and licenses required for many hobby breeders.  View AKC’s previous alert for more information on these amendments.

Changes to county code regarding kennels are not under consideration at this time.
