Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed Senate Bill 2801, which exempts individual participants in squirrel or furbearing animal field trials from the Texas hunting license requirement.  Under this new law, which takes effect immediately, only the field trial organizer is required to purchase a field trial permit that covers all participants, removing the need for each individual to obtain a hunting license.

This change, supported by the AKC, is expected to encourage more field trials and increase participation, especially from those traveling from out of state, by eliminating significant barriers to entry. The American Kennel Club (AKC) strongly supported SB 2801, believing it may help grow the sport and make it more accessible in Texas.

AKC Government Relations thanks all club members and dog sport enthusiasts who contacted lawmakers in support of this bill. Your efforts were instrumental in its passage and swift implementation.
