AKC Government Relations has learned that the Asbury Park (NJ) City Council recently passed a new law to prohibit all breeding in the city – with no exceptions.

The goal stated by the city was to address significant concerns with the care, treatment, and temperament of some who were breeding aggressive dogs in poor conditions.

Some media reports state that it is possible this law will be proposed in other New Jersey communities.  It is imperative that local New Jersey clubs act NOW to begin educating your local officials on the benefits of supporting responsible home-based hobby breeders and to encourage them to only punish those who act in a cruel or inhumane manner.

We also urge anyone who becomes aware of a proposed local laws or ordinance impacting dog ownership or breeding to reach out to AKC Government Relations as soon as they become aware of it. AKC GR is happy to assist communities in addressing issues that impact dog owners and to work to prevent bad laws, but we can’t do this if we are not made aware of the proposals.

What You Can Do:

1) If you live in Asbury Park:  Some public comments made by city officials indicate that they may be open to amendments to this law.  You are encouraged to respectfully contact the Mayor and Council.  Let them know you agree that those who mistreat animals and do not comply with local laws should be held accountable.  However, ask them to differentiate between this and law-abiding, responsible hobbyists.

Names and preferred methods of contact for the Mayor and City Council may be found here.

2) If you reside in New Jersey: Act now to begin educating your local officials about responsible hobbyists, and ask them to not pass any laws that would prevent the responsible, humane breeding of dogs in your community. Also designate at least one person in your club to watch local agendas to ensure nothing is introduced that would impact hobbyists or the sport.   For assistance, review this blog from AKC Government Relations with tips on how to contact your local officials, monitor council agendas, and sample letters to introduce yourself and your club and invite lawmakers to your shows and events.

If you have any questions or would like assistance in connecting with your local officials, contact AKC Government Relations at doglaw@akc.org.

Thank you for your efforts to protect the future of our breeds and responsible dog ownership.
