This week, the Nevada House of Representatives passed a bill banning the retail sale of pets in Nevada pet stores.

Assembly Bill 487 was amended to remove a provision that would have prohibited the sale or transfer of dogs or cats in public places, with certain exceptions for animal shelters and rescue organizations.  AKC and local clubs expressed concerns with this provision and asked for an exemption for previously-arranged sales or transfers taking place on a public site (for example, a breeder and new owner who previously met regarding the sale of a dog could arrange a convenient meeting place to transfer the dog).

While AKC remains opposed to the ban on the retail sale of pets, we appreciate the committee working with AKC and our clubs to address the concern about legitimate transfers of dogs in public places.

Assembly Bill 487 is now pending in the Senate Committee on Natural Resources.  Read our previous alert and talking points for more information on why we oppose the ban on the sale of dogs at pet stores.

AKC Government Relations continues to monitor legislation impacting dog owners in Nevada and will provide updates as they are available.  For more information, contact AKC GR at doglaw@akc.org.
