The Nevada State Senate recently amended Assembly Bill 487, which would have impacted the sale of pets and consumer protection in the state.  The bill has been amended to instead conduct an interim study relating to the sale of cats and dogs by retail pet stores in Nevada. Previously, the bill sought to ban pet stores from selling companion animals and to restrict the sale or transfer of dogs or cats in public places.

AKC appreciates the Assembly Natural Resources Committee working with AKC and our clubs to address the concern about legitimate transfers of dogs in public places.  We further thank the Senate Natural Resources Committee for considering the many concerns with limiting pet choice and consumer protection in Nevada and deciding that further study of the issue is necessary.

The Senate has passed the amended version of Assembly Bill 487, and no further action is needed at this time.

AKC Government Relations continues to monitor legislation impacting dog owners in Nevada and will provide updates as they are available.  For more information, contact AKC GR at doglaw@akc.org.
