Boulder City (Nevada) is considering a proposed ordinance to create a dog and cat breeding licensing regime at the regularly scheduled city council meeting. The proposal would create a breeding permit with required home inspections, a limit of 3 breeding animals, and minimum space requirements. At this time, there is no scheduled date set for the City Council to vote on the proposal, but action could be taken as soon as August 12.
Boulder City residents are strongly encouraged to review the information below and consider contacting the Boulder City Councilmembers to express concerns. Scroll down for more information
Additionally, the ordinance would require a breeder, among other provisions to:
- Have (per dog) 40 square feet of indoor space AND 1,000 square feet of outdoor space.
- Consent to home inspection(s) by animal control officers.
- Obtain a city business license.
- Have no more than 3 intact dogs or cats (total) over the age of one year.
- Only breed a dog or cat over 2 years of age.
- Pay a breeding permit fee.
AKC advocates for and supports measures to ensure the care and well-being of all dogs.
However, we are concerned that these provisions will do little to improve the well-being of animals or address concerns with irresponsible breeding, while creating an unnecessary regulatory burden for responsible dog breeders.
