Yesterday, the Indiana Governor signed House Bill 1412, which allows pet stores to continue to operate in the state so long as they and the breeders sourcing to them meet certain standards and comply with consumer protection requirements.

In addition, the new law would require all rescues transporting more than 12 dogs through the state in a year to register with the Indiana Board of Animal Health.

Finally, it also overturns current local pet store bans that were passed by various Indiana communities and prevent communities from passing these bans in the future.

The majority of the new law will go into effect on July 1, 2024, and more information on rescue registration is expected to be forthcoming from the Indiana Board of Animal Health.

Those impacted by this legislation are encouraged to review the final bill in its entirety.  You may also view AKC’s previous alert for more information.
