Assembly Bill 1999, an omnibus update to the California Veterinary Medicine Practice Act, has cleared the Assembly and is now pending in the Senate.

American Kennel Club Government Relations (AKC GR) is closely monitoring this comprehensive bill impacting numerous areas of veterinary medicine.  As currently written, AB 1999, among many other provisions, clarifies that activities including microchipping, administering vaccinations, and artificial insemination do not need to be performed by a licensed veterinarian.  It also clarifies the definition of surgery and what actions do require a veterinarian.  The full bill may be reviewed here.

AKC Government Relations continues to monitor proposals in California impacting dog owners and will provide updates.  For questions or more information, contact AKC GR at doglaw@akc.org.
