The New York Assembly is expected to vote on a bill on Tuesday (May 27) that would provide new protections to dog-owning renters in the state seeking renters insurance.

New Yorkers are encouraged to contact their State Assemblymember before Tuesday’s vote and ask them to support Assembly Bill 893.

State law already prohibits insurance companies from canceling or denying policies or raising rates on homeowners insurance based solely on the breed of dog the policyholder chooses to own.  Assembly Bill 893 would expand these same protections to those seeking renters insurance in the state.

AKC supports this bill, which further protects the rights of responsible dog owners, while still holding all dog owners accountable, regardless of the breed they choose to own.

The Senate version of this bill (Senate Bill 364) passed the Senate in April.  Passing A.893 would help ensure this measure is sent to the governor later this year.
