A bill is advancing in the Arizona Senate that would prohibit landlords from prohibiting specific breeds of dogs in rental properties if they allow dogs on the premises.

The AKC supports Senate Bil 1439, which provides a proactive solution to addressing shelter population concerns by keeping pets in homes with their responsible owners and also recognizes that dogs should not summarily be banned from rental properties based solely on breed.    AKC is also offering to assist the legislature should they wish to develop reasonable guidelines regarding tenants with truly dangerous dogs, regardless of breed.

The bill is likely to be voted soon by the full Arizona Senate.  AKC encourages Arizona residents to contact their State Senator and ask them to support Senate Bill 1439.  Visit the AKC Legislative Action Center at www.akcgr.org and click on the “Find Your Elected Officials” box to find the name and contact information for your Arizona State Senator.
