Known for its curly, water-resistant coat, unusual tail, and playful personality, the Irish Water Spaniel has a long history as a skilled hunter and retriever. Here are 10 fascinating facts about this breed.

They’re One of the Oldest Spaniel Breeds

Among the many spaniel breeds, the Irish Water Spaniel is believed to be one of the oldest. Historical records suggests dogs resembling the breed existed as early as the seventh century AD.

The name “Irish Water Spaniel” was already being used by the 1100s to describe dogs found south of the Shannon River in Ireland, highlighting the breed’s deep connection to Irish history.

They Were Developed for Hunting and Retrieving

The Irish Water Spaniel was bred to be a hardworking hunting companion. As their name suggests, these dogs excel in water and are natural swimmers.

Their webbed feet and double-layered, water-repellent coat make them especially effective at retrieving waterfowl. They are also capable hunting dogs on land, giving them versatility in the field.

Their Ancestry Remains a Mystery

Although the modern breed is closely associated with Dubliner Justin McCarthy, much of the Irish Water Spaniel’s development remains unclear.

McCarthy didn’t keep any breeding records, leaving experts to speculate about which breeds may have contributed to the Irish Water Spaniel. Suggested influences have included the Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog, and the now-extinct English Water Spaniel, but no definitive evidence exists.

One Male Helped Shape the Modern Breed

An Irish Water Spaniel named “Boatswain” is widely credited with establishing the breed’s modern appearance. Bred by McCarthy in the 1830s, Boatswain reportedly lived to the remarkable age of 20 and sired many notable gun and show dogs.

They’re Known as the Clowns of the Spaniel Family

Irish Water Spaniels have earned a reputation for their entertaining personalities. Their playful, energetic nature has led many enthusiasts to call them the clowns of the spaniel family.

Their distinctive appearance may also contribute to the nickname. The breed’s tightly curled coat creates an exaggerated poof on the top of their head that gives them a unique and expressive look.

Their Coat Is One-of-a-Kind

Irish Water Spaniels are instantly recognizable by their tightly curled, water-resistant coats. The coat is always a rich to dark liver color, a deep brown shade that can sometimes show a purplish tinge.

They Have a Lot of Nicknames

Over the years, Irish Water Spaniels have become known by a variety of names.

Besides being known as the clowns of the spaniel family, Irish Water Spaniels are also known as Shannon Spaniels, Rat Tail Spaniels, Whiptail Spaniels, and Bog Dogs. Two of these names describe the Irish Water Spaniel’s tail, which acts like a rudder in the water, making them better swimmers.

The Breed Once Helped Strengthen Diplomacy

Irish Water Spaniels even have a place in royal history.

In the 17th century, King James I of England reportedly presented an Irish Water Spaniel to the king of France as a diplomatic gesture intended to improve relations between the two countries. The dog is believed to have been the first Irish Water Spaniel brought to France.

Geena Davis Has a Memorable Irish Water Spaniel Story

The breed has appeared in celebrity circles as well.

In a 2009 interview with The Huffington Post, actor Geena Davis shared that she met her future husband because her Irish Water Spaniel bit him after she left the dog at a friend’s house. Davis described her dog as “very sweet and soft” but apparently “she got possessive about the house.”

Fortunately, the story had a happy ending. According to Davis, when she eventually married her husband, her Irish Water Spaniel “fell in love with him.”

They’re High-Energy Dogs

Like many Sporting breeds, Irish Water Spaniels are active, athletic dogs that require regular exercise and mental engagement.

These dogs enjoy having a job to do and can excel in a variety of dog sports. Activities such as agility, flyball, and AKC Rally provide productive outlets for the breed’s intelligence, energy, and enthusiasm.
