With a serious expression, muscular build, and massive head, the Dogue de Bordeaux is an impressive breed. But the DDB also makes a loving and devoted companion. Here’s what to know about this breed.
1. The DDB Is a Devoted Companion
This dog makes an excellent companion, deeply devoted to their owners. They’re calm, affectionate, docile, and steady. They also have a protective instinct and guard their family with courage.
2. They Can Also Be Stubborn
Along with that calm temperament comes stubbornness and self-confidence. Socialization, patience, and positive-reinforcement training are very helpful.
It’s recommended that you start working with your dog early. After all, it’s easier to train a puppy than a grown DDB who may be bigger (and certainly stronger) than you are.
3. They Drool
No, they really, really drool! Anyone who lives with a Dogue de Bordeaux quickly becomes familiar with strings of drool covering furniture, floors, and walls. But to know them is to love them, drool and all.
4. Dogues de Bordeaux Aren’t Small
According to the AKC breed standard, male dogs should measure 23-1/2 to 27 inches at the withers and weigh at least 110 pounds, while female dogs should measure 23 to 26 inches at the withers and weigh at least 99 pounds.
5. DDBs Have Starred in Film and TV
A DDB starred alongside Tom Hanks in the 1989 comedy “Turner & Hooch.” In the 2021 Disney+ series of the same name, five Dogues de Bordeaux (Arnie, Hammer, Obi, Cyd, and Mya) took on starring roles of their own.
6. A French Teacher Helped Resurrect the Breed
In the 20th century, a French teacher named Raymond Triquet fell in love with the Dogue de Bordeaux. He noticed the dog’s resemblance to a lion and decided to help revive the rare breed. Among the dogs he bred was the influential Mowgli de la Maison des Arbres. He also helped define the breed standard.
7. The AKC Recognized the Breed in 2008
The Dogue de Bordeaux received AKC recognition in 2008. This member of the Working Group became the 158th breed to join those ranks.
