Finding the perfect dog for your lifestyle can be a challenge. With so many options, how do you know which dog is right for you? If you’re looking for a bright, lovable lapdog with a minimal-shed coat, consider the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka.

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka’s Temperament

Cheerful, sociable, and affectionate, the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a wonderful companion to owners from all walks of life. As a member of the Toy Group, the Bolonka is an easy-going, intuitive dog who loves nothing more than spending time with their people. The breed’s name translates to “Russian Colored Lapdog,” describing their temperament and rich, colorful coat.

After World War II, Russian dog enthusiasts brought this small, shaggy breed to Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and worked to create a delightful dog suitable for apartment living. Breeders incorporated other small, coated dogs, such as the Maltese, Shih Tzu, and Bolognese, and established the Bolonka as its own breed in the 1960s.

Physical Traits and Grooming Needs

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a diminutive companion, standing no more than 11 inches tall and weighing between 7 and 9 pounds. They have a sweet, intelligent expression with a beard, mustache, and long hair that is often tied up in a bow.

Bolonki are set apart from their cousins in the Bichon family by their colorful coats — they range from light fawn to solid black, sometimes with small patches of white. A non-shedding breed, the Bolonka’s hair is thick, soft, and dense, and falls in large, bouncy curls or waves.

Regular grooming keeps the Bolonka’s signature coat in shape, though their natural curls give them a tousled look. Experts recommend brushing the coat daily with a pin brush and conditioning spray. Weekly baths may be required, with a blowout to prevent mats from forming. Many pet owners will trim their Bolonki into a “teddy bear” cut for easier maintenance.

How Much Training Do Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonki Need?

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is described as the “ultimate house pet and companion.” An intelligent and intuitive learner, the Bolonka is easily trainable and adapts to myriad lifestyles. Their desire to please, and upbeat attitude make them wonderful teammates for companion events such as AKC Rally, obedience, agility, Fast CAT, and more.

Are Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonki Good for Families?

Sweet and sociable, the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is friendly to all. They’re devoted family members who get along well with children, other pets, and visitors to the home. Though the Bolonka is sturdy for their size and very outgoing, parents should guide their kids on how to safely and respectfully interact with a small breed.

How Social Are Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonki?

While the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is naturally outgoing and affable, early socialization will help build young puppies’ confidence. Some Bolonki may bark to alert their families to visitors or strange noises, but should quickly settle to greet their new friends. They’re clever, cordial lapdogs that enjoy the company of humans and other animals.

Designed for apartment living, the Bolonka can thrive in both urban or suburban environments. They’re happy to join their owners on outings — and their colorful, curly coat is sure to draw plenty of welcomed attention.

Every dog is different, even within the breed, so talk to your breeder about whether the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka would be a good fit for you and your lifestyle.
