Members of the Sporting Group, Nederlandse Kooikerhondje (Nay-der-lands-say Koi-ker-hond-jay) are known to be lively, agile, confident, good-natured, and alert. The breed is faithful and easy-going, and loves being around their people. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje were originally bred as bird-hunters, and almost went extinct around World War II as the need for their work declined. Today, they make for good, albeit rare, family dogs.

Physical Traits and Grooming Needs

Nederlandse Kooikerhondje are smaller, white and orange dogs with big hearts. They’re sporty and eye-catching, donning a silky all-weather coat of white and red. The Nederlandse Kooikerhondje’s most recognizable trait are their large, black-tipped ears and feathered tail. The breed is sturdier than they look. They stand between 15 and 16 inches tall, and weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.

Regular weekly grooming will keep Nederlandse Kooikerhondje looking their best. Occasional baths will keep them fresh and clean. Nederlandse Kooikerhondje’s nails grow quickly, and should be trimmed regularly to keep the dog comfortable. Their ears should be checked regularly to avoid a buildup of wax and debris, and their teeth should be brushed regularly.

How Much Training Do Nederlandse Kooikerhondje Need?

Kooikerhondjes are intelligent and lively companions. Work is intrinsic to their nature due to their history as bird-hunters, aiding them in retaining their eager-to-please tendencies. They have a high prey drive and a more sensitive demeanor, making positive, patient, and firm training methods the best for a Kooikerhondje.

Nederlandse Kooikerhondje are an attentive, watchful breed and may moderately bark to alert their owners of any unfamiliar people or activity. The best way to curb undesired barking is with early socialization and puppy training courses.

Kooikerhondjes can make for great family dogs. Their cheerful disposition and intelligent nature make them wonderful household companions. They’re relatively easy to train, and while they require a good amount of exercise, the Kooikerhondje doesn’t demand attention and stimulation around the clock. Kooikerhondjes are happiest alongside their people, and are quite affectionate when they receive the mental and physical stimulation they require.

How Social Are Nederlandse Kooikerhondje?

With proper training and socialization, Nederlandse Kooikerhondje can be social dogs. They can be more reserved with new people, but open up quickly once they have assessed whether or not they’re a threat. They’re quite affectionate with their families, and can get along well with other dogs if socialized early in life.
