8 week old GSD scent discrimination


Shaping odor recognition with a puppy. Use of food reward machines removes handler from the dog’s natural search patterns. Two of the target containers have the same dog food in them as the dog is being fed from the food reward machines.

Initial stages of food machine training


A to B for food machine. Handler moving as distraction. Finished with hand target as an additional behavior. Ten week old pup, third session with food machine.

Second day odor discrimination with puppy Task


Day one was not recorded as there was a lot of trial and error to this dog managing the new task. The problem was primarily his preference for using his feet to manipulate the odor cones. This was an 11 min session with multiple criteria:

1. Identifying odor

2. Extending focus on odor source

3. Self control – no nudging or pawing
