This article gives some interesting perspective about using a clicker or verbal marker to teach behaviors. Marking and clicking are tools, and like any tools they have uses and limitations. From my experience training marine mammals they are highly valuable tools. I also like them for teaching new trainers how and when to mark the peak criteria for any particular behavior.
