The Excitement of Junior Handling

Hello! My name is Cecelia Keech. I am 13 years old and the oldest of five sisters. I enjoy swimming, running cross-country, and playing soccer. I have two Newfoundlands, Baron and Bowie. A year and a half ago, while my mom was showing Bowie, her friend Jenny asked if I was interested in showing her Newf Mo. I thought “why not?” When showing Mo, I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into. But after showing him, I knew I wanted to show again!
In May 2018, I showed another wonderful Newf named Rosie. Going into the ring I was excited and nervous. Thankfully, I was informed by other people showing their dogs on some of the “do’s” and “don’ts” when it comes to showing. Everyone was so supportive. I showed Rosie in a veteran class and had so much fun! Showing Rosie and Mo helped me find a love for dog handling and competing. This is when I signed up for Junior Showmanship.
The third time I showed, I was officially registered as a Junior Handler. I was still nervous, but I felt much more confident showing because I had attended a handling class, observed several shows, and was able to practice under the guidance of professional handler, Becky Reynnells, the night before the show. The show was in Monroe and the Newf was Felon. He is handsome, well trained, and eager to help me find my way. I was filled with excitement showing Felon both Saturday and Sunday. Both days I showed in a Novice Intermediate Junior showing class. The first day, I placed third. Thanks to Becky, the second day I came in with more confidence. She shared with me ways I could improve as a Junior Handler and allowed me to practice some of the new techniques she had taught me. The next day, I took first place!
I am so excited to compete as a Junior Handler in the future. With my passion for dogs and my giant love for Newfoundlands, I look forward to growing as a handler! I know I will enjoy every step that it takes, to get me to my personal best!
