The AKC works with non-AKC service and sports organizations to recognize the titles that AKC-registered dogs earn in their programs. This includes the AKC Therapy Dog program and the AKC Search & Rescue program. AKC also recognizes titles of the Barn Hunt Association (BHA); North American Diving Dogs (NADD); the North American Flyball Association (NAFA); and UpDog Challenge disc organization. AKC Therapy Dog Title
The AKC Therapy Dog Title program offers titles based on the amount of service that a therapy team has volunteered, giving more dogs the opportunity to earn the honor. Dogs also must be certified by an AKC-recognized therapy dog organization. The titles are:
600 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Supreme (THDS) title.
400 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished (THDD) title.
200 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (THDX) title.
100 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (THDA) title.
50 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog (THD) title.
10 visits to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Novice (THDN) title.

Lakewood’S THDS CGCU owned by Peggy Sebastian of Winter Park, FL
While socializing Harry as a puppy, Peggy noticed that he got along well with children. When he was around a teenager who was in a bad mood, she decided to test his personality and brought him to the girl. Within minutes she was smiling and talking to everyone. That’s when it hit Peggy that if Harry could change the mood of a teenager, he had something to offer.
Since then, they have visited senior homes, schools, libraries and hospitals. They have recently added a hospice center to their itinerary as well. They regularly visit a school’s classes for children with dyslexia, and the children read to the dogs. During the last visit, they were assigned to a different classroom, but the children from the previous visit wanted Harry again so he could see how much they improved! “They understood the purpose of the visit and made our visit exceptional,” Peggy said.
Another visit memorable to Peggy was to a hospice care facility. “A simple knock on a patient’s door asking if she’d like a visitor brought a smile so genuine. She shared it was her first smile since she arrived at the care center,” Peggy said.
“Although not every visit to every venue brings such heartwarming experiences, those visits carry us through to the next to continue with this privileged volunteer work.”
Chewbella Rey THDS CGC TKN owned by Victoria Kurdziel of West Seneca, NY
Chewbella Rey, an 8-year-old Yorkie mix, was rescued by Victoria. Not long after, Victoria’s older dog died, and as Chewbella watched tears stream down her face, the little dog jumped into action, blanketing Victoria with comfort.
Realizing Chewbella’s special gift, they started classes. She earned her CGC in November 2017; her first Therapy Dog title in January 2019; and her TKN in April 2019. She also enjoys agility but has not competed.
The pair has been with the Paws of Love program, based at the Erie County SPCA, since December 2017. Chewie was awarded the THDS after putting in more than 700 visits to Buszka Funeral Home in Buffalo, NY, where she does most of her visits.
At the start of their therapy dog career, they went to libraries to sit and read with children, to hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. But for the past eight years, Chewbella has been accompanying Victoria to work at Buszka Funeral Home, Inc. where she is a funeral director assistant. Chewbella comforts grieving families and brings joy to everyone she meets. Families love her, and she receives a lot of compliments. They look forward to seeing her, if they need to come back.
“It’s amazing how she picks up on emotions,” Victoria said. She usually chooses someone who needs her most, sitting next to them or getting on their lap so they can pet her. She enjoys soothing them.”
Victoria can’t help bragging about what a good girl Chewbella Rey is. She has an extensive vocabulary, knows exactly what Victoria wants her to do, and when it’s time for work. She doesn’t mind being dressed in sweaters, jackets, and costumes. On her time off, she enjoys hiking, walking, napping, and shopping at Home Goods with Victoria. She is now teaching her new brother Davinci Severus how to be a good therapy dog too.
Lumos Maxima Orr THDS CGC owned by Heather Orr of Stillwater, OK
Lumos is a 9-year-old mixed breed who was adopted from the humane society in Seminole, OK.
Every time Heather took Lumos to the dog park, she only wanted to visit with the humans. That clued Heather in that she would make a great therapy dog, and she applied to the Oklahoma State University’s therapy dog program called Pete’s Pet Posse. They were selected, obtained certification through Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and began with one of the largest events of the year at OSU – New Student Orientation. Lumos greeted approximately 150 people in 45 minutes and had a blast. Heather knew she would love her job at OSU.
In five years, they completed 659 events/visits ranging from regularly scheduled events around campus, to grief counseling sessions, and the annual Cowboys vs Cancer party for child cancer survivors. On Aug. 31, Lumos completed her THDS title requirement with a visit to the OSU Police Department for stress relief before they headed out to work security for the first game day of the year.
Heather has numerous stories of people who have told her Lumos has made a difference in their lives. “She certainly has changed mine,” Heather said. Lumos still loves her job, but they have slowed down to just one event per week. They will continue to offer support where needed until Lumos is ready to retire – but Heather doesn’t see that happening anytime soon.

Eleven-year-old Preston loves Barn Hunt. When Joanne got him, she simply wanted him to be a well-behaved companion and to become a therapy dog. So, they started taking classes at their local dog club.
“He was smart and quick to learn,” Joanne said.
One class led to another, and they got hooked on different AKC companion and performance events and Preston has mastered many sports. Preston’s love for scent work led to Barn Hunt. Joanne is very proud of his earning the RATCH title at age 11 at The Red Barn in West Columbia, SC, on July 21, 2024.
He is still going strong and working on his next title.

Roo was found as a stray when he was 6 months old and placed with a local rescue. Although Rosemary wasn’t quite ready for another dog, once she met him, she knew he was the perfect dog for herself and Miguel.
“Roo has been the most fantastic partner these last 12 years,” Rosemary said. Roo was already playing agility and flyball when they were introduced to Barn Hunt. Being part Rat Terrier and Shetland Sheepdog, he loved to smell and was always looking for critters in holes in the ground. Barn Hunt allowed him to use his nose and to hunt.
“Roo thinks everything should be done as quickly as possible, and you’ll often hear him when he is in the ring trying to speed things along.”
His favorite activities are hiking in the woods and cuddling on the couch under covers.

Peaches is a spunky 4-year-old terrier mix lovingly referred to as the “Chaos Gremlin” who loves to keep Danielle on her toes. After not passing her CGC evaluation, Danielle’s instructor recommended that she try dog sports, one of which was dock diving. An outlet for her energy during the very hot Texas summers was needed, and Peaches took to water immediately. “Despite her size, she has some mega hops,” Danielle said. On July 21, 2024, they competed in their first NADD competition at K9 Water World in San Marcos, TX, and surprised everyone by jumping 21-feet-6-inches. On the same weekend she not only got her Dock Master title but continued to beat her personal best which is now 22-feet-3-inches.
Danielle and Peaches wouldn’t have started dock diving without that amazing instructor who encouraged them to get involved with sports (and who they still work with today). “She is my little best pal and has taught me many lessons about patience, determination, not taking yourself too seriously, and always having a sense of humor. We can’t wait to see what more surprises she has in store for us.”
Fortunate Sun CA DCAT SCN SIN SEN DM DS TKI VHMA FITS owned by Natasha Gussack of Armonk, NY
Sunny has been competing in dock diving since Natasha found the sport a couple of years ago. Since then, he has completed 22 splashes, with a current personal best of 21-feet-3 inches. He never fails to impress with his spirit, athleticism, and overall enthusiasm for the sport. He’s an older dog, but he still loves to have fun.
“We feel so grateful to be a part of such a wonderful dog sport community,” Natasha said. He’s retired from CAT and Fast CAT now that he’s a veteran and recently debuted in a new sport for them – AKC Scent Work, where he has already placed multiple times.
Though they have ventured into other AKC sports, dock diving will always be special to them, and the plan is to continue with it until Sunny indicates that he’s ready to enjoy retirement. “We have enjoyed the dock diving community and have made many friends, both human and canine. Sunny is a once in a lifetime dog – I try to remind myself of that every day.”

Kiwi is a 3-year-old chocolate brown All American Dog. She is Maggie’s first dog to own as an adult and has been a great partner jumping into the world of dog sports. As Maggie’s true Novice A dog, she has been thrown into nearly every sport. They first started with agility lessons to solidify their bond before beginning to volunteer as a therapy team.
In October 2023, they attended their first AKC multi-dog sports event.
“Boy oh boy, was that an eye opener,” Maggie said. “This is where we learned about Fast CAT, UpDog, Barn Hunt, and dock diving.” After that Maggie began exposing Kiwi to any sport she could. The dock diving season was wrapping up, but once April hit and the pools warmed up, they went to work. Kiwi has always been happy to dip in a kiddie pool and swim at Maggie’s parents’ house, but running and jumping in was something Maggie wasn’t sure Kiwi would ever do.
Kiwi is a sweet girl who loves a snack but couldn’t usually care less about any toy. For weeks, they hit their local dock diving pools at every opportunity. In May, Maggie decided to enter their first NADD event. Kiwi bravely jumped in off just Maggie’s verbal command. Over time, she grew more confident and even started to retrieve the bumper.
By July she had earned her Dock Junior, Dock Senior, and finally her Dock Master titles. “She may be slow to warm up but once she’s got it figured out she’ll do anything you ask.”
Mr. SweetFace Scooby CA FCAT DM DSX2 AJ HDM CGC TKA FITG owned by Nicole Teitelbaum Guerrero of Sunrise, FL
Scooby was Nicole’s eighth foster dog while she was in college at the University of Alabama, but her first foster fail. She rescued him through Paws of Dixie Animal Rescue in Tuscaloosa and had to teach him how to be a dog. He was mistrustful of humans, and they had to work through some reactivity issues. “Dog sports really opened the door to a whole new world for us,” Nicole said. “Now Scooby can go to new places and do things he never could before.”
They spend weekends competing in performance sports like dock diving, CAT, Fast CAT, and more. Scooby has competed in five different states and has more than 200 splashes under his belt. He will turn 5 years old in February and will stand by Nicole’s side on her wedding day all in the same week. He has been with Nicole through her biggest milestones in life thus far: her undergraduate and master’s graduations, her engagement and wedding process, and will be the best big brother to her future children. “Saying he is my best friend is an understatement; I am so proud of him each and every day. I may have rescued him over four years ago, but he has been saving my life every day since.”
He earned his Dock Master title on April 28, 2024, at the 2024 NADD Ft. Lauderdale Dog Show in West Palm Beach, FL.
Vincent Van Coolie DM DS owned by Janice-Lee Hendrickson of Adair, OK
When living in Prince George, British Columbia, Janice-Lee was looking for a kennel for her three dogs. She came across Avalon and found that they were breeding German Coolies. Soon after, she went home with Bella C. from Avalon.
They took lessons at Pawsitive Steps Canine Sports Centre, and Janice-Lee learned how rewarding it is to train a dog. They competed in agility and rally. When they moved to Texas, Janice-Lee found it too hot to do much of anything outside in terms of dog activities but after a move to Adair, OK, she saw that Avalon Coolies had a new litter. Vincent Van Coolie (Bella’s cousin) was placed with her family in January 2024.
Vincent is a high energy dog. He is extremely happy and is good at everything that he does, like Bella, but needs a lot more exercise. He has brought new energy to Janice-Lee’s house. In May of 2024, Vincent had his first dock diving lessons at K9 Manners & More in Tulsa, OK. After one lesson he was diving off the dock into the pool. He loves dock diving, but Janice-Lee could also say that about disc, Fast CAT, Barn Hunt and obedience. Janice-Lee and her husband, Darren, have been enjoying these activities together with Vincent.
On July 21, 2024, Vincent received his Dock Senior (DS) title at K9 Manners & More in Tulsa, OK, followed by his Dock Master (DM) title at CoolWag’s in Bentonville, AR, on Aug. 18, 2024. His personal best after 26 jumps is currently 22 feet.
Janice-Lee is looking forward to 2025 as she and Vincent will continue training and competing in the Tulsa and Bentonville area. “I can only imagine what Vincent will achieve in 2025,” she said.

Three-year-old Oliver started training as a therapy dog. But it didn’t take long to realize that he needed something more active and challenging to match his endless energy and drive. That’s when Search and Rescue (SAR) came into the picture, and it turned out to be the perfect fit for him. He began his SAR training shortly after his first birthday, and after lots of hard work, he earned his first certifications in live find area search and building search through North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA).
By the time he was 2, Oliver had earned his certification in wilderness human remains detection through the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR). His skills kept improving, and just before he turned 3, he recertified in live find area search with the Alliance for Emergency Response Instructors and Examiners (AERIE) and in wilderness human remains detection through the American Rescue Dog Association (ARDA). He has been deployed on numerous missions, searching for both live missing people and human remains recovery, and he is an amazing and passionate SAR dog.
Outside of search and rescue, Oliver also has the AKC Novice and Intermediate Trick Dog titles under his belt, as well as AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Urban CGC certifications. As Natalie’s first SAR dog, Oliver has exceeded expectations, showing not just the smarts and drive needed for this challenging work, but also the deep connection he shares with her and the work they do. With his ongoing training and dedication, Oliver continues to be the perfect partner for the job, always ready for the next search, Natalie said.
