New York, NY — The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) recently recognized 12 breeding programs for their dedication and success in breeding purpose-bred dogs by awarding the inaugural AKC Breeder of the Year by Sport Awards.
The Award is given to those breeders who have dedicated themselves to improving the health, temperament and performance of dogs in a given companion or performance event.
“The commitment by breeders to preserve, protect and improve a breed represents the very essence of the AKC,” said Doug Ljungren, Vice President for Sports and Events. “We’re proud to acknowledge those individuals that have excelled at breeding dogs that have proven to be outstanding in AKC sports.”

The Awards were announced by AKC President and CEO Dennis B. Sprung at the December 2013 Delegates meeting. The 2013 recipients are:
Agility — Janice DeMello, Rochester, WA — Border Collies
Obedience — Yvonne Piefer, Neosho, WI — Golden Ret.
Rally — Elaine Brent, West Salem, OH — Golden Ret.
Tracking — Amy & William Vose, Paw Paw, IL — GSDs
Pointing Breed Field Events — Katie & Tom Tazza, Washington Depot, CT — GSPs
Retriever Field Events — Mary Howley, Portage, WI — Labradors
Spaniel Field Events — Gary Wilson, Cannisteo, NY — Springers
Hound Field Events — Robert Hartman, Columbia, PA — Beagles
Herding — Rebecca Beckmann, Stacy, MN — Border Collies
